Recently, I was sitting on a park bench feeling a little lost.
An elderly man asked if he could sit next to me, and we shared a brief exchange.
As he left, he turned and said:
“You have a really beautiful, soothing voice. It’s nice to hear.”
Just a stranger, turning back to give me one sentence… a moment that made my whole day.
And just maybe, for those few seconds, my voice made his.
These small details… scattered through our days and through other people… are what anchor me.
I walked away from that bench feeling lighter, as if the world had quietly reminded me that I was here, that I existed, that I was seen.
It was something as simple as noticing a small detail about me… my voice.
That mattered.
I’ve always been a collector of details. My ‘secret’ skill is remembering the smallest details about people. Sometimes even people I’ve just met.
Not all of them stay with me forever, but the ones that do feel essential, like little markers of who someone truly is, and the ones that are meant to stay in my long-term memory always do.
And when someone notices a small detail about you, it can be just as powerful.
Like when I complimented a woman’s nail polish last week, and she told me she had spent an hour getting it just right, and no one had noticed until that moment. She said it made her day.
Or when the bartender at my regular spot told me how much it meant that I always remember to ask about his two kids, because most people forget he even has kids.
Or when the elderly woman I visit through a volunteer program told me she had dried and kept the flower I gave her three months ago, because she has no one who gives her flowers anymore, and I remembered that detail she told me a while back.
Being able to take that small detail, do something about it, and make her feel special is a reminder that the smallest things usually hold the biggest meanings.
These are not grand gestures. They’re not the kind of things we post about or even talk about.
But they are the moments that remind us we are all human, coming with beautiful little details.
I genuinely believe that the real beauty is in the details.
In remembering someone’s favourite flower.
In paying attention to their nail colour or hair.
In telling them, their voice is soothing.
In telling someone, their message made their day, or that you were just thinking about them.
In telling someone you are watching their favourite movie or TV show.
I am in love with details.
Every little detail about someone I meet, and that I am getting to know. Because that is the only truly genuine way to see someone.
It’s easy to get distracted by the big stories, big gestures, the drama, the milestones, the grand moments.
But intimacy is built one tiny observation at a time, with each detail one reveals, or that the other person catches.
The real way to love someone is to truly see them… not just for their big gestures, which are also beautiful, but for the little details they didn’t even know you’d notice.
That’s the quiet surprise of it… being seen in ways you didn’t even know you were showing.
The world is full of small, quiet beauty.
The secret is to pay attention to it and to tell people what you see.
And if you are lucky, you’ll have people who notice your details too, and see you right back.
