For millions of Americans, this couldn’t happen at a more opportune time. With 15 months of back rent, empty wallets, and suffering from the post-traumatic stress disorder of a world on fire as the coronavirus pandemic continues its slash and burn across the planet, affecting tens of millions of people, disrupting economies, vaporizing industries, and leaving businesses in need of workers willing to risk returning to work even in light of the vaccines being distributed unequally around the globe.
To stir the pot further, Republican governors, based on their belief in the fundamental prosperity gospels (a man must work, if he is to eat) have turned off any economic pandemic relief. Such relief allowed citizens to be able to supplement their unemployment with funds that would allow them to survive until the workforce could return to work from the nationwide shutdown, implemented to prevent the rampant spread of the virus.
These 24 states are working from the mistaken notion of turning away pandemic relief will stimulate the return to the workforce and the economy by FORCING people back to work. This has resulted in mixed results as people wrestle with incomplete information, conflicting pandemic data from their local government and the CDC, and the development of workplace exemptions that remove liability from businesses if their workers get ill from the coronavirus while at work.
The final challenge lies in the mutation of the baseline virus into nine or ten variant versions which reveal a greater potential for viral spreading and increased virulence. The Delta variant (formerly B.1.617.2), is a version of the coronavirus that has been found in more than 80 countries since it was first detected in India. It got its name from the World Health Organization, which names notable variants after letters of the Greek alphabet.
Viruses constantly mutate, and most changes aren’t concerning. But there is a worry that some variants might evolve enough to be more contagious, cause more severe illness or evade the protection that vaccines provide.
Experts say the delta variant spreads more easily because of mutations that make it better at latching onto cells in our bodies. In the United Kingdom, the variant is now responsible for 90% of all new infections. In the U.S., it represents 20% of infections, and health officials say it could become the country’s dominant type as well.
IT’S NOT ALL BAD NEWS…
In the United States, once the Trump Administration was ousted, the vaccination of the American populace proceeded effectively, getting almost 50% of the country their first shot within 100 days of the new administration taking office. But thanks to the QAnon crowd and the misinformation campaign on social media, the pace of vaccination has slowed enough to prevent the nation from being able to enjoy the potential possibility of “herd immunity” which might have been achieved if at least seventy percent of the nation had been fully vaccinated.
With incomplete vaccination, the rise of the Delta Variant, the reopening of the United States economy, and the continued devastation wrecked by the virus worldwide, even in places where the virus was thought under control, what will this mean to the citizens of the world as they balance their economies vs the lives of their citizens?
