What is it about love that makes it so wildly simple and impossibly complex, all at once? Beautiful, painful, sad, endearing, all of it wrapped up in ways we can barely hold. What even is it, underneath all the versions we have been handed and told to believe?
We watch people say the words “I love you” without meaning them or mean them down to the bone and still lack the map to show it. We see people who want so desperately to want to mean it, but they do not know how it is supposed to feel, so they convince themselves that what they feel is love when maybe it never was. And still, we are left wondering, which version of it is the purest, or is there even a version like that?
What is it about love that we all long for it so fiercely, yet so few of us ever touch the unconditional kind, the true kind without hidden terms and conditions waiting inside it? We swear we have stopped believing in it, yet quietly, secretly, we still yearn for our own little special love story.
Maybe that is why people ruin themselves over it. It is why empires used to fall, why people went to war, and why entire worlds were turned upside down in its name. And if we are honest with ourselves, some part of us still would, even now, quietly, even if we would never dare admit it out loud.
Yet for all its grand drama, love is everywhere, and we still fail to see it. We keep searching for it somewhere bigger, somewhere louder, while missing it standing right in front of us in the quietest, most ordinary places: in the way someone remembers exactly how you take your coffee. In the way someone chooses to stay even when staying is the hardest thing to do.
It arrives in a thousand different forms for all of us, even when it looks nothing like what we were taught to expect. And yet, sometimes someone can tell you and show you, over and over, and still you do not feel it. The words and the actions arrive at the door, but somehow, they never actually get let inside.
Why do we forgive people we swore we never would, if not for love? We build walls, we make promises to our pride, and we draw a line in the sand, solid and fixed. We tell ourselves never again past this point. And then love shows up in the middle of our anger, quiet and unbothered, and simply steps over it. It moves the line without asking us first, making us rewrite the rules we spent years constructing just to keep someone close.
Why do we know the exact weight of it the moment it is gone but could never quite find the words to describe it while we had it? It is like air. You only notice it the second you can no longer breathe it in.
Even after it breaks us, even after we gather the pieces of ourselves off the floor and promise we will be smarter next time, a single soft moment can undo all our defense mechanisms. What is it about love that makes us hopeful over and over again? What is it that keeps us reaching across the dark, wanting more, pulling us back until we feel like we cannot live without it? Like an old instinct we can never fully unlearn.
We spend so much of our lives building, acquiring, and collecting, only to realise that no matter how many material things we have, none of it actually matters in the end without a place to give and receive warmth. What is it about love that makes every title, every luxury, and every achievement feel hollow if we are standing in a room with no one to share it with?
Beyond the noise, the hustle, and the endless clutter of daily life, there is an unspoken reason we endure the hard days. What is it that actually keeps the world going in the true sense of it? Not the systems or the structures, but love, like it is the single, invisible thread running through the background of human history, holding everything else from quietly falling apart at the seams.
It strips us down to something so bare that we are forced to look at the remains and ask, ‘What are we without it?’ What are we, as humans, without love anyway? Are we even human at all?
Maybe none of us really know. Maybe we are all just learning how to love in our own ways, giving it our own meaning as we go.
