On March 15, 2018, Tony Robbins, self-help guru, disparaged the #MeToo movement in an Unleash the Power Within (UPW) event in San Jose, CA as detailed in this interview. On April 8, he released a press statement addressing his actions and apologizing. He expressed his admiration for the movement, agreed with its goals, and added that “sometimes, the teacher has to become the student and it is clear I still have much to learn.”
Reactions have been mixed. While some feel the statement was not necessary or more than enough, others feel it missed the mark. Some feel he is continuing a journey of growth and evolution with sincerity. Others think it’s “too little, too late.” Some also accuse Robbins of using his past history of abuse and 40 years of teaching as an excuse and upsell while others admire his authenticity.

What do you think? What would you tell Tony Robbins? What do you think his next steps of action should be? What do we do when apologies related to mistakes—or even egregious misconduct—in the context of the #MeToo movement miss the mark?
