It’s said that the eyes are the windows to the soul–that they can either accept or reject what they present to man. If man decides to accept what’s presented, it stands to reason that he’ll need time to understand and process what he sees. If he chooses to reject it, the same thing can happen–only, that’s the exact spot where judgement can come into play.
The controversy over Starbucks new holiday cups has set customers as well as social media on fire. Media outlets across the country are reporting that people are outraged by the company’s plain, red design of the cups–claiming they take “Christmas out of the holiday season.” Others say the change is simply a sign of ever-evolving times.
While there is merit to this from a religious standpoint. one has to wonder about the weight of judgement itself. How far is too far? When will it stop?
In the midst of the controversy, Ellen DeGeneres recently took a stand, as reported by Upworthy.com. As shown in the video above, she opened an episode of her show earlier this week with a monologue and message to those who are angered by Starbucks’ decision release the new red cups:
“People are mad about this cup, because they’re saying Starbucks is being anti-Christmas. Starbucks released a statement that said, ‘Belonging, inclusion and diversity are the core values [of the company], and [they] want to give customers an experience that inspires the spirit of the season.”
DeGeneres went on to defend the source of anger behind that very statement. She also defended the outlook of those who are religious–while holding a cup that a producer or camera man handed to her during her monologue She’s been to known to stand up in times when it seems like everyone else is sitting down–to be a voice for people whose voices are drowned out by whatever nose surrounds them. The things she said alluded to the notion that if we get so caught up in anger and judgement, perhaps that’s all we’ll not only see in the world, but act upon.
