Have you ever wondered why no matter how hard you try, the weight won’t come off?
Or why anxiety and a scattered mind seem to follow you, no matter how much you push yourself to focus?
What if I told you that the root of these struggles might not lie in your diet, your willpower, or even your brain chemistry — but in your past? More specifically, in the unhealed trauma stored deep within your body.
Trauma isn’t just an emotional experience — it’s a physical one.
When we experience trauma, especially in childhood, our bodies hold onto it, storing the pain and fear in our muscles, organs, and nervous system. Over time, this unresolved trauma creates layers of protection, not just emotionally but physically — sometimes showing up as weight gain or conditions like ADHD.
For many of us, the battle with weight or attention isn’t about calories or focus — it’s about survival. The body, still operating in a state of hypervigilance, does everything it can to protect us from further harm, even if that means holding onto extra weight or scattering our thoughts in a million directions.
This connection between trauma, weight, and ADHD is something that we’re only beginning to understand, but the evidence is compelling. Studies show that early childhood trauma can lead to increased cortisol levels, which affect how our bodies store fat — particularly around the abdomen. And that same trauma can also keep the brain in a constant state of alertness, mimicking the symptoms of ADHD and making it difficult to concentrate, rest, or feel at ease. I know this one intimately.
Let me share a story about one of my clients, Diana. She’s in her 40s, married with three children. From the outside, it looked like she had a full life, but inside, she was struggling. Diana had a long history of childhood trauma, which left her feeling broken and unworthy. As an adult, she fell into a series of damaging relationships, each reinforcing her sense of inadequacy. And then, there was the weight — she carried far more than she wanted to, despite trying every diet, workout, and therapy under the sun. Nutritionists, personal trainers, hormone specialists — nothing worked. She was stuck, and the more she fought against the weight, the more it seemed to fight back.
But here’s the thing: the weight wasn’t the problem.
The problem was the trauma stored in her body, keeping her in a constant state of defense. Her body was holding onto the weight as a form of protection, and until that trauma was released, no amount of diet or exercise was going to change that. When Diana came to me, we didn’t focus on calories or cardio. We focused on her trauma — on releasing the emotions and memories her body had been holding onto for decades.
Over the course of six months, using body-based integration work, Diana lost nearly 80 pounds. But more importantly, she started sleeping better, her anxiety began to fade, and for the first time in years, she felt at peace in her own skin. The weight loss was a byproduct of the healing. Her body, no longer needing to protect her, was finally able to let go.
What happened with Diana is a perfect example of how trauma distorts not only our sense of self but also how we relate to our bodies and our minds. Dr. Gabor Maté, a leading expert on trauma, explains that unresolved trauma leads to coping mechanisms that often turn against us — whether through addiction, disordered eating, or difficulty with attention and focus. We’re trying to survive in a world that feels unsafe, and our bodies respond accordingly.
And then there’s the issue of ADHD.
We see this on the rise in our youth and adults, but there is little talk about the component of trauma.
For many people, especially those who have experienced trauma early in life, ADHD symptoms like difficulty focusing, impulsivity, and restlessness are more than just chemical imbalances in the brain. They’re part of the body’s way of staying alert — constantly scanning for threats, always ready for the next danger. This is especially true for children who grew up in unpredictable or unsafe environments. Their nervous systems were trained to be on high alert, and that carries over into adulthood, manifesting as ADHD.
We often separate mental and physical health, but they’re intimately connected.
Trauma sits at the crossroads of both, influencing everything from how we digest food to how we think and feel. It affects our sleep, our stress levels, and our ability to trust others. The more trauma we carry, the more disconnected we become from ourselves — and the harder it is to feel safe in our bodies.
For Diana, the healing wasn’t just about losing weight. It was about reclaiming her body, her mind, and her life. The intimacy she struggled with in her marriage started to improve as she felt more connected to herself. She was no longer bracing for impact, no longer trying to protect herself from a world that had hurt her so deeply.
There’s science behind this. Research by Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, (one of the best books that I recommend to literally everyone), reveals how trauma impacts the body’s physiological systems, including the nervous and digestive systems. Chronic stress from unresolved trauma can lead to inflammation, insulin resistance, and even metabolic disorders. What this means is that trauma doesn’t just affect our minds — it can literally reshape our bodies, influencing our ability to lose weight, maintain energy, and even regulate our emotions.
And it doesn’t stop there.
Quantum physics teaches us that trauma also impacts us on an energetic level. The energy of unhealed wounds gets stuck in the body, creating blockages that prevent us from fully engaging with life. In this way, trauma can act like a prison, trapping us in patterns of self-sabotage, fear, and disconnection. But the beauty of this is that when we heal on an energetic level, the body follows. The blockages release, and we begin to experience life in a fuller, freer way.
So, what can we do?
First, we must recognize that weight gain, ADHD, and trauma are deeply intertwined. Healing requires more than just willpower or diets. It requires getting to the root of the pain and letting our bodies release it. This process is not easy, but it’s transformative. I’ve seen it happen again and again — when we heal the trauma stored in the body, everything else begins to shift. We lose weight not because we’re forcing it, but because our bodies no longer need to protect us. Our minds clear because we’re no longer in survival mode.
So, I leave you with this question: What weight — both physical and emotional — are you carrying that’s tied to your past? What traumas are stored in your body, influencing how you live, love, and engage with the world?
Healing is possible. And when we begin the process of releasing the pain within, we can finally step into the life, love, and intimacy we’ve been searching for.
This is why I am trauma focused in my work with people.
We struggle to manifest the lives we want for because of the wounds we hold on to.
