PERCEPTION IS NOT REALITY
I hear often the opposite of this headline. Everyone thinks their perception is reality. If you hear something you pay attention. If you see something it appears real. If you feel something you know it’s real.
I think most people define their relationship precisely as this reality.
What happens if what you see, touch, hear and feel are not real? What if this entire experience you swear is true — is really an illusion. I am not being philosophical. I am asking you a simple question.
Do you know the difference between your relationship being based on perception versus observation?
TELL ME WHAT WE PERCEIVE PLEASE
Perception is an interesting thing. We must delve into what this is. I am particular with words. I enjoy establishing clear communication. This means we must agree on what the definition of a word is.
Psychology and the cognitive sciences define Perception as — the process of getting, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information. (2)
This means our feelings are the process of organizing sensory information. This does not mean what we see, hear, and feel are understood properly.
It is a well-established fact that the skills required to assess perception accurately involves a strong understanding — especially since the complex structure of the nervous system requires a profound knowledge of neuroanatomy. Obtaining a case history can be complicated on why people feel what they do. (3)
When it comes to men, they often have difficulty processing their feelings.
The way I process nonsensical feelings is by writing them down in a private diary. It is a private space where I go to write random down feelings. Often, they resemble no concrete opinion or position. If someone were to peer into this diary — it would be full of contradictions to what you perceive.
Your perception would be wrong essentially.
I do not write my nonsensical thoughts for any person other than myself. It is meant for me to try and sort myself out. It allows me to remove childish impulses, originate past trauma projections and so on. This way when I talk, I have taken time to know what is real versus fake.
I cannot say who does what to process what. I only know my one tool. The point of this section is to detail the importance of first processing firm understanding of internal feelings. From there, we can then proceed to proper assessment of what we are perceiving.
If we base our perceptions on improper observations (such as the private diary example) this would be an example of you taking a wrong interpretation from a valid perception.
TELL ME HOW TO OBSERVE
Observations. What is it and how do we make sure we observe our relationships? Data can be collected in all circumstances. This includes relationships. This also includes love. Observations yield what scientists call data (4). Observations are made in a standardized way.
Standardizing observations allows scientists to rely upon the data yielded. They do not feel it one way or another. The term data generally refers to raw data — information that has not yet been analyzed (4).
If you are perceiving something which has not quantified data; essentially, you are not making any observation in your relationship. When you fail to base your opinion on an observation it is quite possible you may be entirely wrong in your perception of your relationship.
In my personal diary example, which fails to yield any tangible data, it is possible to read a random thought and be completely wrong. Despite the reality of your perception.
This sounds cliché but I would say, “You are Real-ly wrong.”
TAKE AWAYS ON HOW TO GET OUT OF YOUR OWN
An observation must collect some measurable information. Information is only a fact in so much as you have observed it. Observations alone do not analyze anything. The conclusion of the information’s purpose is not fact — it is simply a conclusion.
Analysis is nearly impossible when emotions are riled. Conclusions are elusive when feelings are high. Feelings are defined largely from self. After all, they are your feelings. This means our worlds are often self-centered. I mean this not in the context of egoism. I mean this from the perspective of your framing.
We base many beliefs, ideas and opinions on our personal experiences. Experiences are defined by perceptions. This is especially true regarding the use of our eyes. It is very difficult to shake what we saw. Despite this reality we must learn to use our minds not our eyes.
Empathy is a very strong teacher. The thing about empathy is that it requires observation usage. This means to observe requires pause. It is a very difficult skill to master. When we feel enraged, betrayed or hurt often we fail to observe.
I make no argument it is easy. I only make an argument your perception may be completely wrong. I caution against any conclusion about your love life based solely on perception. It is possible you may have someone who loves you and you fool yourself into thinking.
You can choose to observe in any moment and under any circumstance. Unfortunately, not all my secrets will be discovered in this free article. You must pick up a copy of my international best-selling book “I Made It Then I Didn’t” or order “Many Paths To Profit” for that.
The concept I teach in this article is free. My personal stories are not. Don’t let pennies get in the way of showing you something much more valuable than a dollar. There’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you want to understand how you might improve your ability to observe; find how I retained this ability during million-dollar highs and divorce lows.
