“Adults should know better”
Is this the word of a grown adult or an inner child?
The body ages but the mind stays still
In fear, in immaturity, in overwhelm
A grown adult would bully me
Having no coping mechanisms beyond a schoolyard
And I as an adult I would die inside
Having no coping mechanisms beyond a schoolyard
We all expect our wisdom to correspond to our appearance
But this expectation rarely comes true
We believe how someone looks
Instead of believing how they behave
We continually project our past onto our present
Unable to sit still in the present moment
Our hearts are at ten points of time at once
Never resting at where we are now
In Breakfast Club, a teenager says they don’t want to grow up because they fear their heart will die
But it already died long ago
And that is why she lived in fear
Just like the rest of us
Our maturity does not make our hearts die
Our immaturity keeps us imprisoned
We blame everyone else
While building the bars ourselves
Proud of our skill
That we thought would please the grown ups
It is okay to think for yourself
It is okay to determine that the grown ups are wrong
They are acting the same age you are
But you have the choice to grow up
Your heart will not die
But it will look different than before
And that is okay
Because sometimes unfamiliar can be the most beautiful thing
Childhood rarely lasts beyond a few years
But we keep playing with our toys
And saying what mommy and daddy want to hear
Our innocence is lost before we know what it is
And the pain ends those allegedly carefree years
Your inner child can be at peace
Knowing that an adult is growing wise
It is just them as if they are maturing
And becoming all that they are meant to be
Your heart will not die
But it will look different than before
And that is okay
Because sometimes unfamiliar can be the most beautiful thing
You’ve got this.
