If you need to find a new house due to a major life change, this means you’ll soon be facing a move. This can be a stressful time if you don’t do all you can to plan. The key to making any relocation less challenging will rest in taking time to prepare for it and knowing tips that can make it easier for you. Here are things you can do now to decrease the anxiety of your next move.
Make a list
Writing down all of the tasks you will need to complete is a great way to make this time much less complicated. This will allow you to check these off one by one and could be the key to getting something accomplished on a daily basis.
Below are some things you may want to put on your list.
1. Call a moving company, such as North American Van Lines, to prepare for your big day.
2. Pack each room one at a time and put all the contents in boxes and then label these for easier unpacking.
3. Call your utility and electric services to cancel these and be sure to phone the ones you will need at your new location.
4. Tell you family and friends that you will be moving and forward your new address.
5. If you have other family members, you can assign tasks to each one to help make this time less stressful.
Plan a garage sale
Of course, the key to packing less and making this time much easier to manage will rest in getting rid of some of your belongings. The fewer things you have to pack and move the easier this entire process will be.
You could take time to organize a garage sale, and it’s a very good idea to put an advertisement in the paper about the date you intend to have it. Another thing you can do is give away a lot of things you aren’t currently using.
Rent a storage unit
You may not know what to do with all of the things you won’t need immediately, but you may not want to get rid of these. Some valuable items include exercise equipment, electronics and designer purses that may not be needed immediately but that you want to keep.
It’s a great idea to place these in a storage facility for a certain amount of time. You can typically rent a storage unit for a reasonable price and doing so will allow you to feel secure about these things.
Be sure to organize all the things you intend to put in this storage space to help you make the absolute most of the unit you rent. Doing so may allow you to choose a smaller unit and this will add up to savings for you.
The average cost for a storage unit that is 5×5 is $40-$50 per month. Keep in mind this is the smallest available unit, and if you want a larger one or one that offers climate controlled temperature, you may need to pay more for it.
Moving is never the easiest thing to do but can be done with less stress when you only work towards making it less full of anxiety and more fun. Going to a new area to live can be exciting and is sure to have you full of anticipation about all the things to do there and different people you may meet. Get started today planning your next move and you may find it’s not nearly as challenging as you thought!

I like that you touched on how some people might not want to get rid of all their things immediately. It makes sense that some people, particularly those who are downsizing, might need to offload some things but don’t want to. My new house will be a little smaller than the one I’m currently in and I think having a storage unit could be a great place for my mom’s old furniture because I don’t want to get rid of it but it takes up a lot of space.
