How would your life be different if you didn’t care what other people thought about you?
Mine has become drastically different over the last 12 months. I made a decision to close my business regardless of what my clients, staff, and competitors would think. It took around 12-18 months to grow a pair big enough to finally do it. There was no certainty that it would be the right thing to do but removing other people’s opinions made the decision a simple one.
I’m not 100% comfortable in making massive decisions that will ultimately make me happier whilst impacting others around me but I can now make sense of it and understand that living a life to please others is the fastest way to slump into a dark depression. I’m better than I was but it’s a continual work in progress to ensure I don’t revert back to becoming a people pleaser at the expense of my own health. After all, can you really be the best at helping others if you don’t firstl help yourself?
It’s easier when it’s work colleagues that judge you rather than close friends and family but judgment is a natural thing so wherever it is being directed from your approach must be the same. You should certainly respect the opinions of your loved ones but you don’t have to live by them.
The next time you have to make a decision stop to ponder whether you are making it out of fear of what others will think or whether because it’s actually what you want to do. Of course, there will be times in life where we have to do things to benefit our loved ones that we may not be particularly keen on but in general, I see people doing things they hate to please people they don’t even like. It’s more common than you think. It’s easy to fall into the trap of wanting to be liked and basing decisions on what will keep the peace.
Will you care about the opinions of these people when you are on your death bed?
If the answer is no then you know what to do.
