Although exercise is associated with many health benefits such as improving the condition of your heart and weight loss, it is associated with a high degree of risk of joint injuries. Depending on the activity, you may end up putting a lot of stress on your joints and end up hurting yourself. According to experts, this should not force you to opt out of training. All you need to do to avoid the risks of joint and other injuries is to plan for your routine depending on your individual needs and physical capabilities. Exercise should be fun and enjoyable to everyone but some people push their bodies to the limit by trying what their bodies are not capable of accomplishing. Ensure you take the required precaution like wearing the necessary gear before engaging in a risky activity such as cycling. In addition, ensure your workout plan is based on your needs and goals, not others.
Doing too much, too soon
We engage in a routine workout to improve our overall health and wellbeing. You should keep in mind that achieving a sound physical condition is not a onetime thing but a process that is significantly based on patience and effort. Your muscles and joints are designed to handle just what they can, and the continued impact of what they cannot handle leads to great damage. When beginning an exercise, you are highly motivated to keep going for longer hours and often forget to give your joints and muscles the time to slowly adapt to the new exercise. It is important to start with simple activities and shorter durations to not only allow your joints and muscles to adapt but also other various systems in your body such as circulatory system and respiratory system. Various types of joint pain arise from engaging into too much exercise too soon.
Performing the same activities all the time
It is always advisable to change your routine from time to time. Engaging in one set of activities all the time only works out one set of muscles and joints. For example, if your only exercise is jogging all the week long, you end up using only one set of muscles and joints the entire week. Repeated use of the same muscles and joints leads to tear and wear of the joints and muscles. Therefore, it is very important to engage in different activities to involve varied muscles and joints and enable them to move in different directions and intensities hence preventing over exhausting, tearing and wearing them out.
Wearing the wrong footwear
As it is said, prevention is better than cure. Most people visit a local shoe discount shop and pick an inexpensive pair of shoes for their exercise. Most people do not realize that every shoe is made for a specific purpose. For example, running shoes are very different from shoes used in playing football or basketball. Therefore, it is very important to visit a specialist shoe store so that the specialist can analyze and gauge your legs depending on your needs and recommend the appropriate shoe for you. This will be helpful in preventing joint injuries caused by improper training gear.
Exercise with improper technique
Although there are some exercises to improve your health and you can comfortably undertake from home with minimal supervision or guidance, there are others that require strict trainer’s instructions and guidance. For people who desire fast results and are impatient, they rush for sophisticated activities without the proper knowledge and training on the activities and end up hurting themselves. Regardless of the kind of activity you want to undertake, it is very important to be conversant with the appropriate techniques before undertaking the activity.
Skipping the warm-up, cool down or stretches
It is always good and safe to prepare your body for activity by warming up and stretching before undertaking the actual activity to get your muscles, joints and other body systems in shape for the activity. In addition, it is also crucial to allocate some time to cool down after a long period of physical exercise to give your muscles, joints and other body systems time to resume normalcy. Most people often forget the importance of warming up and cooling down and eventually end up overstraining their joints and muscles hence resulting in various types of muscle and joint pain.
Conclusion
It’s your responsibility to minimize or completely eradicate the risks of joint and muscle injury as you exercise. This is only possible by taking the appropriate precaution before and after a long period of exercise. In addition, you should keep in mind that physical fitness is not a onetime thing but a process that requires effort and patience.
