RSVP for Weekly Calls on The Disposability of Men

Knowing what we now know about CTE…knowing the prevalence and popularity of American Football, from very young ages…
How about we start testing the brains of those who commit egregious acts of violence for CTE. Not just NFL or pro ballers… but husbands who murder their wives and then kill themselves, mass shooters who kill themselves or get killed in the process. Test their brains after death to see if there is a correlation between adult male violence and CTE.
To be clear, male violence is prevalent around the world, while American football is not. But CTE can be a result of any high impact sport or activity that involves repetitive hits to the head. Also, to be clear, my hypothesis wouldn’t be that male violence is a result of CTE. My hypothesis would be that CTE exacerbates a predisposition to be violent…and that predisposition can be traced largely to heteropatriarchy and toxic masculinity as a result of the socialization of boys and men to not express a full range of emotions.
We’re socializing men to be angry and violent, then placing them on the front line of the most disposable positions, at times in service to our country, at times for Monday night entertainment. And to throw a monkey wrench into it all…black men are consistently over-represented in these sports and activities. That is not an accident.
I could be way off, but I feel it’s worth researching. Share your thoughts!

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.

This is something I’ve been thinking for a long time. There is more to this than “men are violent”. Men and boys have their humanity stripped, twisted, broken, and violated in order to turn us into socially acceptable little tools. There is a pretty damaging misandry, sexism, and oppression in the way men and boys are raised to deny their humanity to the point that we believe that manliness is an absence of many of the key parts of humanity itself. This goes far beyond “we’re taught to think feminine things are bad”. That’s where people stop when their main… Read more »
Appreciate that, Danny.
