In an amazing YouTube video posted by Photovolcanica, a pyroclastic flow creates a series of tornados on the slopes of Indonesia’s Sinabung Volcano. CNN is reporting that searchers called off attempts to find survivors of recent eruptions. The magnitude of the forces of nature is astounding to watch.
There has been significant loss of life and massive destruction due to the eruptions of the Sinabung Volcano. This footage is an amazing document of the power this volcano can display. What amazes me most about this footage is the sense of vast scale it invokes as tornados follow the superheated flow down the side of Sinabung. It’s like looking into some nightmare layer of hell; beautiful and terrifying at the same time.

I am no meteorologist but my layperson’s eyes tell me that those rotating phenomena are akin to dust devils, not tornadoes.
