Jay Snook reviews the latest entry in the X-Men franchise, and he says it is a must see this summer.
This movie has everything needed to be a huge blockbuster this summer! It was directed by Bryan Singer, it is the sequel to the 2011 film X-men First Class, it is rated PG-13 and it has a running time of 131 minutes.
I was very excited when I heard they were making this film. Every time I saw a new trailer for it, my excitement grew. The story line is a very important one in the X-men universe. There was a lot of risk of screwing this up in many ways, but I am glad to say this film doesn’t disappoint. It is not only an amazingly well done film, but there are many surprises in this film that they kept away from all the trailers.
This film begins in the near future, and it not a pretty sight. It is a future where these giant robots known as Sentinels have gone around and either captured or killed any mutant that it sees. They began by just hunting mutants, but over time they also started to attack and kill any humans who dared to try to help mutants. What is left of the X-Men run to a monastery in China with one goal in mind, to send someone into the past to stop this war before it begins.
It turns out the only man for the job is Wolverine, and it is up to him to find the young Charles Xavier and Magneto and help them join together to prevent this horrible future from ever happening. But with the threat of mutants getting worse every day, and with Bolivar Trask out there trying to push the government into letting him send out his Sentinels, it is apparent the threat is already set to begin at any moment. Why does this future happen, and is there anything that can be done to change it in time?
Hugh Jackman returns as Logan/Wolverine, Patrick Stewart is the old Charles Xavier/ Professor X, Ian McKellan plays the old Magneto/ Erik Lehnsherr, James McAvoy plays the young Charles Xavier/ Professor X, Michael Fassbender plays the young Magneto/ Erik Lehnsherr, Jennifer Lawrence plays Mystique/ Raven Darkholme, Ellen Paige plays Kitty Pryde, Nicholas Hoult returns to play young Beast/ Hank McCoy, Halle Berry plays Storm and Peter Dinklage plays Bolivar Task.
This is a very well done film. The plot runs smoothly, and it is simple to follow. The scenes in the future are fun to watch, and the special effects do a great job of bringing this nightmare future to reality. When Wolverine goes into the past, the way that the mutants are brought together is a blast to see, and Hugh Jackman does a wonderful job bringing the heart and determination needed to help make this mission a success. But what is really interesting is that there isn’t that much Wolverine can do to stop it, he is really just a small player in this quest. All he really does to help make it come together is to bring some mutants together and unite them for a common goal.
But it isn’t an easy task for Wolverine at all. By this point, Charles Xavier and his school are a mess, and they don’t have any students left to teach. After the Vietnam War, many of these mutants go drafted, and many of them disappeared or were never heard from again. Magneto is in a maximum security prison, and for this mission to be a success he has to be broken out. With his cell being at the bottom of the Pentagon, and with no metal in sight, this seems like a mission impossible. But with the help of Quicksilver it all works out just fine.
The film ends in a wonderful way, and this film doesn’t drag on or get boring at all. So far this movie has made $90.7 million in the US alone, and it got the #1 spot this weekend.
If you a fan of this series, or even if you aren’t, it is imperative you see this movie. Trust me you will not regret it.
