Honest words from one of comedy’s greatest minds.
—
In 1999, George Carlin gave a speech to the National Press Club in D.C. to promote his book Brain Droppings. Over the course of an hour long speech, he skewered an entire room full of press correspondents on the people and stories they cover – and had them on the floor laughing. This ten minute riff on how politicians use language is a prime example of the subtle genius of one of America’s great comedians. His critiques of society, politics, culture, religion, and whatever else he set his sights on ring as true today as they did then. And although a new generation of political-minded comedians like Stewart, Colbert, Lewis Black, and Louis C.K. have picked up the torch, it’s safe to say there will never be another Carlin.
