This speech given by Malcolm X fifty years ago… Why does it feel like he could stand up right now and give this same speech?
Because very little has changed. Except, of course, that we’re rarely talking about billy clubs anymore. Now we’re talking about guns. Guns used on unarmed people, on women and on children as young as 12 like a beautiful young boy named Tamir Rice.
UpWorthy asks:
We can only wonder why so little has changed. Maybe it’s because, while things have gotten better in broad strokes, power on a local level — being less visible — can more successfully resist change. It can get away with holding onto old abusive cultures while the rest of the country moves forward.
So what can we do? Will the recent findings about racial bias in the Ferguson Police Department help?
When we will start valuing Black lives, every single Black life, as 100% equal to white?
We should be ashamed of ourselves that Malcolm X, were he here today, would still be seeing so much police brutality.
