I’ve been reading up on Saint Valentine and the Roman, Catholic and Pagan origins of roses, chocolates and Hallmark cards on February 14th.
I’m just not buying it. Don’t get me wrong I am all for love, romance, doting husbands, and kinky sex. It’s just that I support those activities on a daily basis not just one made up day of the year.
The problem with Valentines Day is that it puts too much pressure on everyone involved. It’s kind of like New Years Eve without the booze. For no good reason we are supposed to do something special, have someone special, be happy and in love.
I am in love. But I’m a miserable SOB most of the time and I resent being told to act otherwise.
I really believe its this capitalist conspiracy by flower peddlers (I asked the biggest one in Boston about my theory but he played dumb with me other than to say its his biggest day of the year by far). Think about it. Do they celebrate Valentines Day in communist countries?
I’m sure Fidel has clamped down on this rose crap.
I’m thinking that there is some Big Brother somewhere in the bowels of corporate America who first came up with the idea of converting the birth of Christ into a fat man themed orgy of rain deer. The same guy turned His resurrection into a celebration of bunnies, colored eggs and jelly beans.
Then he got bored. Finally, he called down the hall, Hey Jimmy isn’t there some Saint of Vegtables? How ’bout we come up with a holiday of love with flowers and chocolate? That will really make people’s heads spin. Restaurants can even use special menus and charge quadruple for no reason other than commercialized romantic love!
I’m not buying it. And neither should you. This thing is a hoax. Just say no.
I’m right there with you (except for the dozen roses I just ordered for my wife).
although i agree with u tom these clebration are giving joy only to the shops and retailers and bakers.
Dude, you rock!! I have said this at least a 1000 times and people look at me as if I’m crazy…
thank you for speaking the truth..
Although I do agree that Valentines Day has its roots in consumerism, I don’t take the day too seriously. It mixes up the routine of a regular average day. It would be kind of boring if throughout the entire year we only celebrated one holiday. Easter bunnies and hearts are cheery and cute. I don’t think you have to spend much or any money to have a little fun with the day. It breaks up the routine of a 365 days of the year.
Just some reminders…it is OK to not be in a relationship. It is OK to not wish to be in a relationship. There is nothing wrong with you if either is true about you. You are still a normal human being.
19th century Taiwanese aborigines seemed to take it pretty seriously.

Nothing says “I love ya baby” like an enemy’s severed head.
Valentines day is just another one of the several “praise women days’.
I really wonder where all the modern independant and equal women are when they expect to be pandered to, when they expect to be proposed to and when they expect to receive an engagement ring.
Time to man-up ladies.
Well, we are writing articles for GMP for starters, encouraging everyone to share a little love on such silly Hallmark Holidays. My guy bought me a sweet and simple engagement ring in 1995 and I bought him one right back. We’d talked about marriage together so…..Some of us have always been here.
Valentines Day is not necessarily a product of a conspiracy, but there are specific romantic customs that are essentially products of corporate design. The diamond engagement ring as a common custom for the majority of people is something that the De Beers diamond monopoly pushed about a hundred years ago. Same thing with the diamond anniversary necklace or ring. De Beers arbitrarily decided that the proper amount to pay for an engagement ring is two months’ worth of the man’s salary. They just pulled that number out of thin air.
Stop denigrating the Rites of Lupercalia!
Consumerism. That’s the guys name. Egads. And yes, to all that on all holidays and ew. Also, the 5 million blog posts that will go up, to both couples AND singles, on “surviving” today. WTF to all that, too. However. I kinda just accept V-Day. However, I try not to think on it as a consumptive day (except for chocolate. Please send chocolate.) but instead a specific day when I can tell the people around me I love them. YES I get it and I do this every day, but it would be nice if we legit took a day… Read more »
As a woman, I am right there with you on this. I totally think that Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, New Year’s Eve, etc. are totally made up and put a lot of pressure on people to buy things & do things in an effort to express a sentiment that we recognize should be shown (and felt) throughout the year. Even so, I’ve never really had a problem with any of these made up days. We don’t usually express those things all the time – in fact, I think it would be impossible to constantly have enthusiasm about these… Read more »
Tom, you must be my secret unknown brother. 😉
I could not explain otherwise why I always agree with you! 😆
