What do you do
when the Internet
makes you cranky?
The Internet is like an ocean. Sometimes it seems calm and tranquil (so long as you have the luxury of ignoring what’s going on beneath the surface), but then–seemingly out of nowhere–a perfect storm hits and you can’t turn anywhere without SOMEONE ANGRILY EXPRESSING THEMSELVES AT YOU VIA THE CAPS LOCKS KEY.
The most obvious solution is to shout out, “EFF THIS NOIZE” and bail the heck away from your phone/tablet/laptop/computer/Google Glass/whatever and embrace the relative peace of the offline world, but in order to do that you have to bail the heck away from your phone/tablet/laptop/computer/Google Glass/whatever and some of us have addictions to feed.
So, baring the obvious (that means you person who just read the headline and is now typing, “Don’t go online, duh” right this very second) what do you do during those moments when the Internet just seems a little more frantic and upsetting than usual? Do you take off your shoes and curl the carpet with your toes? Do you seek out the most adorable animal videos you can find? Or do you dive directly into the storm and take no prisoners in a desperate kamikaze mission of self-righteous fury?
Any advice would be helpful. The Internet is driving me off the wall this week.

I stop reading comments!!
And I stop posting about vaccination conspiracy theorists.
And then I drink a Moscow Mule, my current favorite cocktail.
Also, love the cranky pic.
I’m a big fan of the MM myself!
Jerk off, go hit a boxing bag, go for a run, talk to your partner, do something else, play a game.
Welp, I can say I’m familiar with the “burn it all down” strategy 😉 Right now, I’m on “Internet lite.” I’m still reading my favorite blogs and using social media apps that are heavy on visuals/contents and very light on interaction/comments. It’s kinda a “one-way street” model that bypasses most online conversation – and I have to say I’m already getting more accomplished and paying more attention to my actual surroundings – not to mention saving a little sanity. When I’ve been fully online and engaged, though, my sanity savers have been cranking music as loud as it will go… Read more »
Ha! Curling the carpet with your toes is always an excellent option. If I can’t/don’t want to be totally offline I’ll watch funny YouTube videos and check out articles from longform.org.
In my experience, it’s been something of a catch-22: my best excuse for being away from the internet has been having a day job. But just about the only way to attain such a thing anymore? Guess where you gotta apply…. I finally got something after about a year and a half. But in the meantime, since a year and change ago when I just walked away from one of my Facebook accounts because so few of those “friends” were actually friends, I’ve just been keeping it simple; finding kind and like minds, and maintaining an accessible and intimate personality.… Read more »
