You may know by now that I was a flight attendant for a brief period of my life. Been there, loved it…
I also worked in the airport as a check-in agent and it was oftentimes chaotic to say the least.
During my time in the airline industry I realized, pre-security equals very stressful grumpy people. Post-security equals more relaxed, less rude and almost bearable people.
I’ve had passengers checking in that were close to tears just from the stress of the airport alone. They weren’t late, their flight wasn’t delayed, they had all their documents in order… but they would be in almost hysterics.
I remember one woman, the poor thing, I thought she was going to throw herself on the ground in a fetal position at one point. I helped get her through the check-in process gently, and she was very grateful.
I remember another time when I assisted a woman who was bitterly snapping at her family and you could feel the tension. I thought she was going to throw herself onto the ground kicking and screaming, taking her children and husband with her.
Again.. I could literally feel the stress radiating from her and her family. I – the airport agent once again saved the day and got them all laughing. It was a great stress relief for them.
However, I will never forget the story of one woman who missed her flight by several minutes, demanding for the plane, that was just taxying down the tarmac to turn around and return to the gate.
The agent, I’m sure, was looking for the hidden camera, or waiting for a laugh from the woman, or a smile, or anything to indicate she wasn’t actually serious. This did not happen, nor was she able to catch the plane, you know- the plane that was rolling down the runway.
Airport tip #1
Arrive to the airport 3 hours prior to departure.
Yes… three hours.
So if you’re flight departs at 10:00am, be there for 7:00am.
I will always and forever only travel this way, ask my family… and I am never worried about arriving on time!
Airport Tip #2
Security does not care if you’re going to miss your flight. They will not let you ahead of the line. Sometimes… oftentimes… the lineup at security can be over 30 minutes long, or at least 30 minutes long.
Flying is fun, travel is fun… so get to the airport early and relax with your latte ☕️
