James Bond’s past comes back to haunt him and enemies thought long gone return stronger than ever
James Bond has been on a lot of adventures on the big screen. He has fought bad guys of all sizes, races, and they have all had terrible diabolical plans for world domination. Bond has been played by many different men and each one has found a way to bring something new to this well known character. This is the fourth time Daniel Craig has played as Bond and this is a direct sequel that continues shortly after Skyfall ended. It is a different kind of Bond film that will not be for everyone.
The film begins with James Bond (Daniel Craig) in Mexico during the Dia de Los Muertos festival following an order from the last M who is now deceased. He finds the man he is looking for and kills him an steals an octopus ring he has in the process. The times are changing and some people think the 00′ program is a thing of the past, but the new M (Ralph Fiennes) knows this is not true. But Max Denbigh (Adam Scott) is moving forward with a plan to link all of the world powers together to change the way agencies stop terrorist threats. Bond finds the hideout of the secret organization known only as Spectre and sees someone he thought to be dead. The plans of this villain are not easy for Bond to figure out, but one thing he does know is he has to stop him before it is too late. With the help of Q (Ben Whishaw) and Moneypenny ( Naonie Harris) he may be able find out what they are up to, but it won’t be easy. Who is the leader of Spectre? What are they planning on doing? How are they going to achieve their goals? And will Bond be able to stop them in time?
This is an okay Bond film but there are a few things wrong with it. The Bond girls were lacking in a number of ways. There was not as much passion between Bond and these women and they were only there so he could move forward with his plans. One of them he pretty much uses and leaves right after she tells him what he wants to know, never to see her again. The second woman he only stays around because he made a promise to protect her, but most of the time their is little to no passion between them either.
Another thing that hurts this movie is the villain. Christoph Waltz is a great actor and can play a role like a violin when given the right tune, but here he was underutilized. Not only does the villain not come off as highly dangerous or larger than life, but his goals are not that dastardly when you take a look at them. Yeah it is bad what he wants to do, but in many ways this is already happening. All he is doing is giving things a small push, so his goals are not something that is fitting for a Bond villain.
But the worst thing is this writer’s opinion was the theme song. “Writing’s on the Wall’ is a great ballad by Sam Smith but felt out of place for this movie. The song was dark at some parts and others just felt strange to me. I have heard a lot of Bond themes in my time and this was by far the worst. Next time hopefully they spend more time on it because it really helps to build the excitement for what Bond will be facing and if the song is like this there is no guarantee that will actually happen.
The movie gets 6/10. As far as Bond films go this is not one of his best adventures. There is too much wrong here to make it a movie that people need to run out and see but fans may not be totally disappointed. Daniel Craig sure does bring a different spin on Bond and he is not at fault for this movie. This writer had high hopes for this movie and left more confused and disappointed rather than satisfied with how everyone goes and how things turn out.
If you are a fan of James Bond this is a film you may want to see. If you are looking for a good action flick you may want to check this movie out. This writer only hopes they learn from the mistakes of this movie so that next time Bond brings something that everyone will enjoy. Spectre is coming out today.
