One size does not fit all. We want to hear about what makes you uniquely male and uniquely you.
Here are some additional prompts to get you started writing:
- Does the “traditional” model of masculinity resonate with you? How does this model fit you?
- Has your perception of your own masculinity changed as you’ve aged? If so, why?
- Does the expression of your masculinity change based on the situation? How does it affect your relationships?
- Is your wardrobe “masculine” because those are the kinds of clothes you like to wear? Or is it just that they make you “feel like a man”.
- Can you be “manly” without having a single stereotypical masculine trait?
- Is your expression of masculinity rooted in ethnic or cultural expectations? How are men different around the world?
- What will fatherhood look like in the next generation?
- How do you succeed as a man when you disagree with the standard definitions of success and masculinity?
These are some of the topics that we want to know about, but if you have others, please submit those too.Â

Does the “traditional” model of masculinity resonate with you? How does this model fit you? The notion of “traditional” model of masculinity implies a cultural definition of masculinity. Whatever definition that may be won’t hold true in all cultures. Traditional models of masculinity in other cultures can’t be expected to fit with me. Iow, don’t hold me to your standards because those are yours and they aren’t necessarily mine. Has your perception of your own masculinity changed as you’ve aged? If so, why? Not really but, as I’ve aged, I’ve stopped caring what I think masculinity is. Does the expression of your masculinity change based on the situation? How does it affect your relationships? I don’t sit there and try to decide “what would a… Read more »
The traditional definition of masculinity is awful. It has done so much damage to our world from wars to climate change to abuse both child and spousal. There are so many issues with the definition the best thing to do is to start over. There should be no definition of masculinity and for that matter no definition of femininity. Each person is an individual regardless of sex or gender and should be permitted to live life as they please without fear of judgement or retribution. The best place to look for this breakout is at women. Women have been on… Read more »
The problem with masculinity is that most men can’t make an invisible psychology tangible, so it creates confusion about it’s origins. When you sow confusion, there becomes an identity crisis. Yet, per-industrial society seemed to embrace it, to identify with it, even had rites of passage from boyhood to manhood. That ritual is lost today. It’s not true that there isn’t one single definition of masculinity. I can some it up in a nutshell: “masculinity is a man’s passion for life” (it’s in the word “emasculation” which is a draining of a man’s life-force, of his essences, of his passion… Read more »
