As we get older, life becomes more complex. We find ourselves in the midst of loss, challenges, heartbreak — inevitable experiences that are not easy to deal with. Today’s guests walks men through these challenging times to reclaim their power and innocence.
Think about the last time you found yourself in a challenging situation or transition.
It may be right now, or it may have been a while ago.
It may have felt like a small dip or a deep chasm.
Take a moment to call it to mind.
Whether you’re thinking of a major life change or a smaller daily struggle, consider what got you through this challenge and what got in the way…
Did you turn to books, articles or experts? Or was this information too theoretical?
Did your inner critic make things harder for you or did you manage to “tame” it so you could take your next step?
Did you turn to friends, mentors or family or did you turn away from help?
It’s clear we can’t avoid challenge, loss and heartache throughout life. But we do get to choose HOW we face these difficulties.
And we create more or less suffering for ourselves as a result of the mindsets we hold, the contexts and stories we believe and the ways we choose to isolate or connect.
Today’s Man Alive Podcast guest, Eivind Skjellum, is very familiar with challenges and transitions. He guides men through deep, archetypal work to reclaim everything from power to innocence. He is committed to waking up one million men before he dies and works hard to make this happen!
In today’s conversation we discussed:
- How to reclaim your kingly nature
- The importance and facets of the hero’s journey for men
- How to consciously fall apart during hard times, rather than be pulled into the underworld
- How to navigate life after the fantasy of youth fades away and reality reasserts itself
- Empowering ways to reframe life and access more strength and freedom
Many books and movies I’ve been exploring with my kid talk about the underworld. It reminds me how facing challenges helps us recognize and build our capabilities. And how it tends to be the darkest time before we find a new place of light.
Whether mild discontent or deep dissatisfaction, dark nights have their purpose. When you descend into the underworld consciously you gain access to power, truth, intimacy, passion…the aliveness we celebrate here at Man Alive!
May your journeys bring you more fulfillment than you even knew possible.

Check out Honest Sex, a new book author Shana James.
Some say we are outgrowing marriage as a culture. However, the problem that author Shana James regularly sees as a relationship coach—and through her own divorce—is that many of us have not matured enough to create the emotionally-connected, sexually-satisfying relationships we long for.
Honest Sex teaches us what kind of honesty is effective for creating closeness, what sex actually is (rather than what we’ve been taught), and how to communicate desires and upsets to create more intimacy. By examining new ways to sustain connection with a partner, author Shana James illuminates a framework for relationships to start strong and get more intimate and exciting over time.
James is the creator and host of the Man Alive podcast and has a TEDx Talk, “What 1,000 Men’s Tears Reveal About the Crisis Between Men and Women.” As a relationship coach for 20 years, she humbly discovered the causes of disconnection and distrust in relationships, as well as how to build trust and keep passion alive. Her first book, Power and Pleasure: A Man’s Guide to Becoming a Confident and Satisfied Lover and Leader, supports men to be fulfilled in love and work. In this book, written for all genders, she uses her Master’s in psychology, DISC, and Positive Intelligence certifications to guide readers to create more honest and passionate romantic relationships.
