I Can Only Imagine, which debuted nationwide on Mar. 16, gets its name from the tune by MercyMe, a popular Christian rock band that peaked in the early 2000s. MercyMe’s lead singer, Bart Millard, came up with the song after the death of his father, with whom he had a tumultuous relationship. That’s the backdrop of the film, which stars Brody Rose as young Bart, J. Michael Finley as adult Bart, and Dennis Quaid as Bart’s father. On a production budget of just $7 million, I Can Only Imagine has already turned quite a profit, bringing in $17 million over the weekend alone. The Hollywood Reporter says that’s “the fourth-biggest domestic opening for a faith-based film.” Rotten Tomatoes critics assigned I Can Only Imagine a ho-hum 65 percent fresh score, but it has a sky-high 96 percent audience score, and Social skews in that direction, too: Over the past seven days, #ICanOnlyImagine has 87 percent positives. –Alex Shultz
