Tool Tuesday – Circuit Breaker Detective
If you are replacing a light, an outlet, a light switch or anything else electrical, you will need to turn the power off at the breaker Panel.
If you don’t know which circuit something is on, this is a very useful tool.
If you don’t feel comfortable touching the electrical panel, there is no shame in that. :0)

i’m gonna show you how to uh change a

a light and so before i got to that i

thought i should show you how to use

this circuit detective

circuit detective comes with this these

two pieces

and then you could actually get some

supplemental pieces of these

and i’ll show you why here in just a

so like what you would do is you’d plug

if you’re going to change an outlet

you’d put this into the wall and then

you run over to your circuit breaker and

you run up and down your circuit breaker

and figure out which circuit it is

so i’ll show you that in just a second

and then

um if it’s not just a plug if it’s a

lamp then you could use this

screw this in this cable separately so

you’d screw this in and then you plug

into here right plug that in here and

then you’d run to your circuit breaker

or if you got a couple of bare wires

you’d clip this on

ah so anyway let’s get started

okay so i just plugged this into this

wall outlet

and then now i’m gonna go back to my

circuit breaker panel and

use the other piece to to figure out

which circuit

is this this outlet on okay

okay so i’m out of my circuit breaker

panel and that’s what it looks like

it’s fairly well um labeled and i can

of tell where things are but um i’m just

going to show you how this thing works

so the way you do it

is you actually you push the button to

turn it on

and then i run down to learn the panel

and then i actually run it down again

okay so it tells me that it’s number

see how that works so if i if i wanted

to turn the power off here

to that circuit over there i would just

flip this to the left i don’t want to do

that right now because i’m not actually

change it but all you do is just flip

i’m gonna unscrew this

one of these lights okay

and then i’ve i’ve got this attachment

that screws in i’m just going to go

plug in my plug that into the adapter

and i’m going to screw it in

and before we run down there you know

you got to make sure this light is

turned on

right if it’s if this light’s off and i

run down there to check it

uh it’s not going to be able to um talk

right so you need to see that that red

light’s on right there’s a red light

on there um so that’s on so when i go

down to check it

um it’ll be able to communicate with it

okay so we have that one plugged in to

my light in my master bath

and so now we turn this thing on

we run it through to learn the system

then you run it back through again

and it’s 22. so 22 is my master bath and

i actually have that one

marked good so i know that that’s master

bath because we did a remodel recently

so i know for sure that that’s correct

anyway if i was going to change that

light i just flip that to the right

and turn 22 off but the next one i’m

going to do is actually a light i’m

okay so this circuit i actually don’t

even know what uh

which circuit it is so um anyway so when

take this apart be careful because the

power’s still on

right so right now i’m just on

taking that taking the black one off

and then i’m taking the this is the one

i need to worry about this thick one is

the actual live wire okay

so now i’m taking this one off too

okay and then if you so we’re gonna

connect these okay

and i already have this plugged in right

it’s already plugged into my adapter

i’m just going to connect the black

to the black okay and make sure you use

that sleeve right when you’re

connecting it make sure your fingers are

on that sleeve so you’re not touching in

metal the metal

and then same thing here we’re gonna

clip that one on here

okay all right so those are clipped

and then i need to make sure that the

power’s on

see so my red light

see how my red light’s on okay so now i

can go test it with the circuit breaker

and see which circuit it’s on so we can

turn it off

okay so now i’m back at the circuit

breaker panel and i need to turn my

my circuit detective on run through so

it learns it

and then run it through again

okay it’s 14. so that thing’s on circuit

breaker number 14

so i’m just going to go ahead and turn

that off i got to make sure

let’s see here yeah

and you can see that the light is off so

that circuit breaker number 14 that i

turned off

the power’s off to this light now so i

can go ahead and

swap it out and that’ll be my next video
