Recently my husband’s company switched to new health insurance, BlueCross BlueShield. I didn’t give it much thought because I assumed it wouldn’t affect us that much. But, yesterday, I was proven wrong.
I pulled up to my regular pharmacy to pick up my Symbicort. Instead of being free, like it had been, it was now $342! I was gobsmacked! My wallet wasn’t happy, the poor pharmacist wasn’t jolly(they have a tough job), and I was less than thrilled.
For those of you that may be wondering, Symbicort has no generic and is a medicine that makes it so that I can breathe without the use of an emergency inhaler. Breathing is important. So crucial in fact that it is a necessity for being considered alive.
So, while I was blessed enough to leave with my RX in hand, hoping that it was a mistake, I couldn’t help but wonder about people who need this medicine, or that aren’t so blessed.
Where have we gone wrong in America that a medicine necessary to breathe is something only for the upper class?
I know the upper class likes to breathe as well. But really? America can’t we do better for our families? Business owners can’t you do better for your employees?
I have heard about price gouging on prescriptions drugs before. I have never heard of it about an asthma inhaler. Naively, somethings, go on in this world and do not apply you, so you don’t think twice about them. That is until they do affect you.

I am Murphy’s law in action (if you doubt that, ask my husband). I like to say I'm a classy lady when in reality I put on red lipstick and run around in my pajamas. I’m a parent to a teen, wife to an exceptional husband and dog mom to two unruly doods (Rumple and Rosie). I try to swear less, sometimes this cannot be avoided, and captain cuss word shows up (this usually occurs directly after Murphy's law has kicked in, it's a vicious circle).
