1oo Words on Love, by Don Mathis

The first thing the nurse said when she saw him was, “He’s got beautiful feet.”
And he does – one sole smooth, one wrinkled.
Because Charlie was a transverse lie, his head was the last to leave the womb.
They cut the cord and he howled.
I called his name, he stopped crying, turned toward me.
I know he recognized my voice from the times I talked to him in the womb.
I gently rubbed his side as he dozed under the warm light.
And when Charlie startled, he grabbed my hand with both arms.
And I fell in love.
