Men don’t generally have to worry about being called sluts because we invented the word to put down women.

We live in a sexy place. Almost anything you can think of has been sexualized in the media. But at the same time we’re taught to suppress our sexuality. That’s where you see slut shaming. So it’s perfectly okay to purchase a revealing outfit, but to wear it? In public? The nerve!
Men don’t generally have to worry about being called sluts because we invented the word to put down women.
A traditionally conservative man might slut shame this woman (though he would slut shame her much less than a traditionally conservative woman would), but this man is not dressed as a traditionally conservative man. I feel that if this is an actual event the comic artist witnessed, he misinterpreted a man (and with those shorts, a power twink) ironically ribbing a woman for her very conservative outfit. If liberally dressed men were likely to slut-shame, then this comic would be insightful- but traditionally conservative gender policing dictates what men wear more than what women wear, so this is not the… Read more »
While I agree there is definitely a double standard (although where I grew up up most men would not have been caught dead wearing shorts that short, and I got made fun of endlessly by my friends when I wore my track shorts) I find this comment funny: “Men don’t generally have to worry about being called sluts because we invented the word to put down women.” The first known use of the word slut (specifically “sluttish”) was used by Geoffrey Chaucer in the lat 1300s to refer to a dirty man. Mind you the next known instance occurred about… Read more »
I don’t think it’s true that men are “never” slut-shamed. I’ve seen references to certain men being ‘hound dogs’ and ‘players’ that were intended as derogatory, though overall it’s far more commonly something that is used to put down women than men. OTOH, men are far, far more likely to be shamed for having too few sex partners than women. And I think it’s also important to point out that both of these disparagements are deployed by women as well as men. (I’ve seen claims that women are actually more likely to slut shame other women than men are, though… Read more »
He doesn’t say “never” he actually says “Men don’t generally have to worry about being called sluts”
Sorry dude but maybe you should read the article?
“Almost anything you can think of has been sexualized in the media. But at the same time we’re taught to suppress our sexuality.” Ain’t that the truth. That’s pretty crazy.
Are you kidding me? I used to get called a total fag if my shorts were even a half inch above my knee. There is no POSSIBLE way that that guy wouldn’t get at least a few funny looks if he walked around town wearing those daisy dukes.
You are apparently completely out of touch with reality
So that’s 2 people now who’ve never been to queens, san fran, p town, portland, burning man, or clubbing?
Sad…
I think he already did a comic about that though:

@ Louis
You go to the beach. Women wear even less and are never called sluts in my experience. You could have 100 guys go topless in a movie and have that on broadcast television. One female breast lands it an R rating. It’s weird how people claim about this “double standard” and then complain about female breasts being exposed in film.
How are you gonna say anything about women when “in my experience” means having lived as a dude?
Never in my life will I complain about female breasts being exposed in a film, LOL
I live in Portland and I’ve been called “gay” and “faggot” for wearing a tight shirt and rolled up pants. I think you’re a troll, honestly.
Men have significantly less freedom of dress. This is obvious and anyone claiming that men are not shamed for what they wear is committing emotional abuse.
Another bizarre double standard? Men are the only ones fag-shamed. There’s 2 sides to ever coin, isn’t there??? Neither gender has it all bad or all good!!! That’s what you need to remember. And the only men that are not slut- shamed are HETEROSEXUAL men by the way. Gay and bisexual men are not called man’s man, studs , or players when they have lots of partners. They are called promiscuous, sex-deviant, and slutty among many other derogatory terms.
By the way, ANY man dressed like what you depict in your article would not only be slut-shamed but he would also be creep-shamed, called disgusting etc. The same society that sexually objectifies women is the same society that thinks that men’s bodies are disgusting and ought to be covered up!!!
I’m heterosexual and I dress like this man.
Have you never been to NYC?
i just want to be clear that you are not wearing those ludicrous 5inch seam shorts with the turns up, that look like an ‘n’ and make the body look ridiculous, that i saw the young men here in the uk wear this past summer. that you are wearing shorts at groinlength, like sean connery as james bond: http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/gallery/2014/sep/19/scotland-and-england-300-years-of-union-in-pictures?index=16 that you wear nonathletic shorts with a two/three inch seam, like i and decades of men before me wore until one day in the early 1990s while shopping to go on holiday, i went into one shop and could only find… Read more »
edit:
1 the men who wore them when
2 fair play to you and your cohort
“And the only men that are not slut- shamed are HETEROSEXUAL men by the way.”
No. They are deemed to be sluts by default. Ask any boy or man who’s been sexually assaulted by a woman. There’s something wrong with them if they don’t want it.
