Detained
by John Bembry
They had me detained for wanting the money. (All in the wood and down here in Venice.)
I been detained, I’m black, for nothing. (I’m always plotting, I’m always on missions.)
My brother detained out of the county. (From Carson Del Amo to Florida, Tampa.)
I got detained but then I got lucky. (Living this life too much stuff will happen.)
When I make it off of probation, time to get money, no time for vacation. We working and faded. I went through these phases and made all these changes to be able to make it.
My family been through some s , but none is in vain. I don’t have side chicks,
No girl beside me. My girl is money, I made her my main.
I done heard people tell me they gone kill me. I done heard people tell me that I’m switching. Yet I’m still living, you better be cautious. All of that talking, come show me you with it.
Disrespect me, I can’t show no feelings. I live the life, I’m not trying to get sentenced.
I hang with people that really get money and really got bodies that mean they some killers.
Looking Back
They had me detained for wanting the money.
I’m glad I didn’t go to prison. I left him living, ‘cause he got children. I have a future and his is not certain.
He not with his daughter ‘cause he got a sentence.
Only the real, always the facts, neck getting cramped, Ingle- wood on my back.
Put us all on the map. They sad, still doing pills, meth and the crack.
Heard my little brother got caught and detained. Most of the homies got caught and detained. Some went in and come out not acting the same. Still doing drugs and they living in shame.
I made right choices because of the pain! YEA. I’m blessed and destined for all of the fame! YEA.
Two of the homies still caught and detained. Back and forth, in and out at a young age. Contagious, avoiding it like it’s the plague. Different designer, I craft and create.
I know some real, I know some fake. I got some love, they got some hate.
Still too slow, I’m at a faster pace. Thinking how they shot you all in the face.
I swear, when I make it off of probation, don’t let me see them two faces.
I’m always gone in different places.
In the Key of Love
Think of my problems it’s cases on cases on cases on cases on cases on cases.
Not getting hit with the numbers. Five of mine dead in a slum- ber. I been the prey, now I’m the hunter.
Living this life, you gone fall but keep going. Homies are dying, the numbers are growing.
Stick to myself and don’t show no emotions. Steady the pace, yeah I’m keeping the motion. They had me detained all over the city because my skin black and I found it repulsive.
I’m not religious, I’m living my culture. Yeah it’s a lot but I thought you should know it.

“Here’s the thing about The Good Men Project. We are trying to create big, sweeping, societal changes—–overturn stereotypes, eliminate racism, sexism, homophobia, be a positive force for good for things like education reform and the environment. And we’re also giving individuals the tools they need to make individual change—-with their own relationships, with the way they parent, with their ability to be more conscious, more mindful, and more insightful. For some people, that could get overwhelming. But for those of us here at The Good Men Project, it is not overwhelming. It is simply something we do—–every day. We do it with teamwork, with compassion, with an understanding of systems and how they work, and with shared insights from a diversity of viewpoints.” —– Lisa Hickey, Publisher of The Good Men Project and CEO of Good Men Media Inc.
