Women are more susceptible to certain issues than men and vice versa. There are many reasons why this is the case; sometimes, problems are connected to a person’s physical body while other times it has to do with society. The following are some conditions and issues that affect men more than women.
Alcoholism
Alcohol can attract men and women, but it seems that men fall into alcoholism more than women. The alcoholism rates of men versus women cause some to speculate about the reason. Researchers found that it could be due to dopamine. Alcohol generally triggers the release of higher amounts of dopamine in men than in women. Dopamine is a chemical that the brain creates to make you feel better, among many other things. This chemical helps men feel an increased pleasurable effect.
Men who choose to drink should definitely exercise restraint to make sure they do not become addicted. It’s imperative for men to find a center for alcohol detox in the event they are already dependent on drinking in order to feel good. The quantity of alcohol required to achieve the desired effect only increases as time goes on, putting tremendous stress on a person’s bodily organs and increasing their risk of stroke and other deadly health problems.
Suicide
Another disturbing truth to discover is that suicide rates among men are also much higher. This is not to say that women’s numbers should be higher but it is an alarming rate. There are a few reasons why this might be happening to men more than women.
One reason that women are less likely to commit suicide is that they are not afraid to express their issues to mental health professionals and loved ones. Men do not want to admit these issues nor do they want to ask for help, which could have something to do with social norms. Some say that the reason has to do with feelings of discontent since men are expected to do a lot with their lives. The reasons do not matter; it is important for a man who feels this way to seek help as soon as possible.
Depression
Depression can affect a person’s overall life and affect men and women, but it seems that the long-term consequences affect more men. There are a few reasons why this might be true, some of which were mentioned earlier like having trouble expressing your feelings.
The trigger that affects a man the most is stress. Some men think they can handle the stresses of life, but they bottle them up and allow them to cause harm given enough time. This is one reason men should pay attention to their stress levels, and try to find ways to relax every day just to be sure.
Heart Problems
As you can see, men are susceptible to all sorts of issues such as stress and depression. Perhaps these issues also make them more susceptible to heart problems, too. Yes, heart problems are more likely for men than women for a number of reasons, some already mentioned.
Another reason deals with the estrogen present in women. This hormone helps increase the lipoproteins inside women, which helps keep bad cholesterol levels under control. This is something men cannot do so it does put them at risk.
Men should definitely pay attention to some of these health issues because it gives you a good reason to change some of your bad habits. Hopefully, you also take steps to be a little more healthy and you find the courage to be more honest with those around you.
