I want to write a love song
But where do I even begin
Where are the words I want to write down
And when will this loneliness end?
It all seems so easy
How hard could it be?
Just a pen, and a paper
Thoughts of you, and of me
I know how I feel
I know what’s at stake
How hard could it be
To write my heartbreak?
. . .
Love songs are happy
Love songs bring joy
But love songs can hurt
My heart’s like a toy
Broken in parts
Broken in two
So empty longing
For more time with you
If I had the words
Just the right ones
I’d write them all down
And my song would be done
. . .
But wait!
That’s not yet a song
The words need some music
to flow right along
So which notes to use
Notes of true love
Notes up so high
Or notes just enough
To capture a melody
As lovely as you
Where do I start
And where do I go?
. . .
Only five lines and four spaces
On the musical staff
Doesn’t seem like enough
Not nearly by half
To find the right notes
The ones that proclaim
My truest of love
My one life-long flame
So now with the notes
And all of the words
I have all I need
in that one minor third
. . .
As the melody builds
And the words follow on
What you hear is my heart
Waiting for dawn
Dawn of a love
All fresh and new
Dawn of a love
Me, back with you
So yes, I will wait
My heart longs to be strong
To wait all you need
No matter how long
. . .
But between now and then
I’ll have to hold on
And learn how to write…
Write a love song
