I think women reinforce gender norms more then men. Ask any woman how she feels about dating a bisexual man and see how quickly she changes from Gloria Steinem to Ann Coulter.
What I’m really curious about is how it works with other languages and other cultures. It’s a lot easier to imagine these things as a native English speaker, because English doesn’t have gendered nouns like in Romance languages. In Spanish and French, (almost) every single noun and adjective is either male or female. Get rid of gender completely, and those languages are fundamentally different. I just don’t see the Academie Francaise ever tolerating the end of gender.
There’s a difference between biological sex and gender, so getting rid of gender categories does not mean there would be no physical differences. Even the recent bathroom law in North Caroline recognizes the difference between biological sex and gender! Obviously gender is more than just reproductive function. No one has ever had to present an ovum to be allowed into a women’s restroom, and no one has ever been required to give a viable sperm sample before being allowed into the men’s room. There would be no one to pick up the check. The restaurant industry would fall. Shortly thereafter would go the world food supply industry. Fishermen and would be imprisoned anyway, for their sexism. Farmers would endure the same fate once convicted of milking only female cows. Within a few short months, without even mother’s day to save them, the flower industry would perish. Roses would be the new tulip, suddenly rendered worthless, and it would be the bubble all over again. World markets would crash and there would be unrace riots in the streets. Hospitals would be overwhelmed as manhole… Read more »

So this really IS where progressives want to go … I thought it was a joke but I guess not. Mark, I could see he discrimination at work change. Things like heavy lifting that women would have to do rather then calling on men to do it for the. But how could that be? Equal work, equal pay, right? LOL, 30+ years ago, back when I was just starting in the corporate world, a vender came into the office. He was a rally good looking guy. A couple of my female associates asked me to follow him into the bathroom… Read more »

The world won’t end with out gender. It would have biological sex and inherent sexuality to carry on quite nicely. I have an idea that just think what would happen to this bathroom argument if we just simply accepted people for who they are and how they wish to express themselves. No more bullying for being different. I could still identify as a man yet wear a skirt into the men’s rooms. You would legislate in that case to solve the problem of subjective saying you “feel” like this or that by requiring bathroom use by biological sex. Wearing clothes… Read more »

wellokaythen … GREAT observation. I hope a progressive liberal will respond. LOL, try forcing Mexicans to degenderize their language.
