It is often said that love is the greatest feeling.
But life happens and things change.
I used to believe in fairytale love. A fantasy that was locked in my imagination.
It came from the literature I read and the movies I watched. However, reality has shown me that there is more than one type of love.
The fog lifted when my feet touched down on South Korean soil. A different culture taught me about different ways to live life.
I met new people from all over the world.
One of my friends told me that love was not absolute but could be divided into categories.
At first, I shrugged this knowledge off as a negative way to look at the world. My decades of reading and movie-watching showed me nothing was more powerful than love.
Over the next few years, I experienced many relationships and breakups that started to give validation to what I was told in South Korea.
Just like any other feeling things love is different for everybody. The way we feel it can be special for one person but less intense for another.
Looking deep within myself and thinking about what I have experienced I know agree that love can be categorized.
In Love with Lust
At the beginning of a relationship, we cannot keep our hands away from our partner. This fascination with the physical form is one of pure lust. We want to possess and use what is offered to us.
An animalistic urge.
Is this love? I doubt it, more of a primal thing that doesn’t strike deep in the heart.
It hits like an endorphin rush which is similar to how an addict gets his fix. However, the important difference is that these initial stages do not last forever.
There is a kind of normalizing process that eventually takes over and the sexual activity dies down from what it once was.
I wonder how deep these initial feelings actually are? Many relationships break up after the initial buzz is gone. For me this stage takes place in my brain and in the sexual regions of my body. Not often do I have feelings that are directed to a new partner that comes directly from my heart.
Enduring Feeling
The chesty kind of love is found in longer relationships. The commitment creates strong feelings that grow and thrive. For some these last a lifetime for others, they dissipate earlier.
It is a comfortable feeling like putting on a favorite piece of clothing. It is safe and there are no nerves or danger associated with it. A place where the feelings of love pump from the heart to every place in your body.
It is a happy place. I admire those who have it.
Love for all
I have deep feelings like this, but they are directed towards actual existence itself. Sometimes when I think about the world, I feel a warm glow inside of me. I think about the different cultures on Earth and think it is a miracle that we are all alive.
Many others have the same kind of love. Usually, it isn’t as universal as my own. The love of animals and the love of food are two of the more popular ones.
It becomes a kind of obsession. We see people spending vast amounts of money to add to their collections. Often this in itself replaces physical love.
Whatever makes you happy cannot be that bad for you. I don’t frown at it. That’s just what floats other people’s boats.
Meeting good people is rare these days. Often people are tied up in their own lives or phones it is hard to get through.
People you get along with which you love to communicate with are special. The love flows between you. Energy is given and received from these people.
They seem to make everything click.
They make life better.
There is nothing like having a good friend.
What Love is Best?
This question is a bit loaded. It comes down to what you are looking for. If you operate on a purely physical level, then being in love for lust is right for you. Enduring love is great, but it doesn’t always reach the heights that you may want. Having said that there is a comfort that cannot be found anywhere else.
Love of all or for a passion works well as it often follows the central interests in a person’s life. I find it can be lonely after a while as often it is a one-sided thing. Great for downtime but not for a lifetime.
Friends and family are important factors to support anyone’s life. You need them to be able to communicate with and enjoy what is out there.
Any kind of love can be great, but it is up to you to decide what you want.
The great thing about life is that you can change what you want at any time. Nothing needs to be for a lifetime if it isn’t making you happy.
Love isn’t easy no matter what form it takes.
It is like the colors we paint our lives with.
By choosing the right colors we can paint a Monet. A masterpiece that comes out of our dreams.
