Houston City Councilman Dave Martin recently urged the public not to donate to the Red Cross, calling the organization “inept” and “disorganized.” “Don’t waste your time, don’t waste your money,” Martin said. “Give it to another cause.” It’s not the first time the Red Cross has come under fire for a supposedly lackluster disaster response. Despite receiving $500 million in donations after the catastrophic Haitian earthquake of 2010, the Red Cross reportedly built only a handful of homes. News organizations like NPR and USA Today have said that social media is to blame for increased skepticism of the Red Cross since criticism can now be shared in real time. But it looks as though Social’s outrage at funds being allegedly mismanaged by the Red Cross has been grossly exaggerated: Opinions of the Red Cross add up to a powerful 85 percent positive score. 30db’s analysis makes sure to treat the Houston reports as negative news, but the Red Cross banner continues to fly high. –Hugo Guzman
