“You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” — Martin Luther King Jr.
I did it. I finally did it. I decided to stop dreaming and start doing. I decided to take the first step. To take a leap of faith. To stop letting excuses get in the way. To stop allowing fear to hold me back. Finally, stop planning, and start taking action. I did it! I started my own business!
I’ve become sick and tired of struggling. I’m no longer comfortable in my position. I don’t want to live paycheck to paycheck anymore. I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket and work a single 9–5 job ever again. I’m done being broke. I’m done working for others. I’m done doing what the world expects of me. From now on, I work for me. I do what I want!
I’ve been lied to. I’ve been deceived. Work hard, save up, and you’ll surely succeed. It took me almost 43 years on this planet to finally learn the truth. This does not get you ahead.
I began studying. I started reading articles about making money. I started watching YouTube videos on how to buy businesses with no money. I wanted to learn the truth that everyone either failed to teach me or didn’t know themselves. I want to know how to break out on my own with a successful business.
The real catalyst for my eventual decision was a phenomenal book called Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki. It helped change the way I think. I started keeping an eye out for opportunities. I started seeing the potential in things. But even though my perspective had changed, I still had no idea how to seize it.
I kept learning. I kept studying. I became hungry for more. The ability to work from home and schedule my hours gave me an advantage. It was a test.
I knew that when I started my business, whatever that would be, I would need to manage everything on my own. I knew that I would need to plan, schedule and prioritize, without supervision or oversight. I knew that I would need to work hard and bring balance to my workflow. I would need to prioritize. And most of all, I would need to get everything done on time.
So I continue to work part-time as a Quality Assurance Coordinator for Scribble Maps, testing, creating their help articles, and writing their blogs. QA is mine to manage. I still work as a Freelance Quality Assurance Specialist for the IHUBApp. I’m not just a Freelancer, I’m also a client and an IHUB Ally. The platform is important to me.
These aren’t jobs to me. These are partners, friends, teachers, and learning experiences — these are companies I believe in and fully invest in.
But regardless of my love for these companies and the work I do, it’s not enough for me. I’m hungry. I’m ravenous. I have a desire that cannot be quenched. I cannot be satiated by these alone. I have my own goals to reach. I have my dreams that I aspire to accomplish.
Lately, I’ve been watching a lot of videos from Alex Hormozi. He doesn’t beat around the bush or sugarcoat it. He’s real. He’s raw. He’s honest. Starting a business is hard. There is no easy path. It takes blood, sweat and tears. But most importantly, it takes action.
He helped me realize, that for my entire life, I’ve been a “Wantrepreneur”. A dreamer and nothing more. And the only difference between a “Wantrepreneur” and an Entrepreneur is action. Stop thinking. Stop planning. Stop hoping and dreaming. Start taking action and just start doing.
If it’s not the right time. Do it! If you don’t have the money. Do it! If you don’t know what you’re doing. Do it! It’s a never-ending learning process. And you can’t start learning until you start doing. He teaches that if you can succeed when times are bad, you’re going to soar when times are good. So the harder it is to get started and the more “Don’t Quit” you have in you, the more likely you are to succeed. It’s about grit!
So, while I have no clue what I’m doing, I’m starting a business. I have people in my life who have businesses — I can learn from them. I know people who work in marketing — I can ask them questions. I’m acquainted with people in finance — I can pick their brains. I have a friend who’s in real estate — he can teach me. For whatever areas I’m weak in, I can surround myself with whose strengths I can’t rely on.
Does that mean I’m not scared? No. I’m terrified!
The imposter in me screams ever louder. “What if I fail?” “What if I can’t do it?” “What if my business falls apart?” So what? I’ll say thank you and start another. I will fail, and I will mess up, but the important thing is, I’ll learn. It’s about grit!
Now for the real question — what am I doing? What business have I started?
