I used to live in New York City. That was my home town. Then I went to school in New England, spent some time in South Carolina, the Midwest and Colorado. None of those places is known for its tacos. Now I live in Texas.
I never much cared for Mexican food. Now I live in Texas.
I didn’t get tacos. Now I… well, you know.
What is a taco?
A hard or soft tortilla shell surrounding a filling that can be satisfying, healthy, comforting, orgasmically tasty… all at the same time.
Who doesn’t love a good taco?
If you’re vegan, you can stuff it with beans and roasted veggies, add some pico, maybe an avocado… it’s all good. If you crave meat, there are plenty of options. Then there are fish tacos… OMG, fish tacos!
Those are probably my favorite, though the fried avocado tacos from Torchy’s are amazing.
Are you sad? Depressed? Feeling like life has no meaning? Have a taco.
Not sure where to go on a date? Take him or her out for tacos and cerveza. Or tacos and margaritas. Who doesn’t love that? And, if they don’t — do you really want to date them?
Need a fun family night? Kids love tacos.
Hiking for the day? Picnic on tacos.
It’s finger food, but it can also be oh-so elegant. You can spice it up, or keep it bland. Corn tortillas rock, for those with gluten issues. Flour tortillas are fine, if you can’t stand corn. But, who doesn’t like corn?
Want to eat healthy? Tacos can be very nutritious and delicious.
Besides, it’s a great way to celebrate holidays like Cinco de Mayo. Hey, we’re a multi-cultural society now. I may never come around to liking mariachi and I may not really get quinceaneras, but tacos — that I understand.
Not into the Mexican food palate?
Where I live — there are places that offer up tacos filled with Indian, Indonesian and Thai flavors and other cross-cultural phenomenon. I guess the taco purists might be disturbed, but honestly, they should try these variants before they judge. My favorite vegan taco includes Indian fried cauliflower and a Vietnamese pickle relish. I can easily eat three.
Gluten-intolerant? Stick to corn tortillas. Can’t do grains? Try lettuce wrapped around taco fillings.
So, if you’re having a tough day — go ahead, have a taco.
