This week, the Berry family discuss their experience with the recent snow storm that devastated Texas. Mario communicates how he was still learning through the absence of school. And Michael touches upon the constant need to remain resilient and persistent through ever-changing times.

– Mario has asthma.

I’m a diabetic.

Those were serious concerns for us.

Still are concerns for us.

I’ve been vaccinated, thank goodness.

Adam’s been vaccinated.

But at any moment, we thought we could just step

out of the house and catch a disease and die,

00:16

and that’s super stressful.

And we’re a happy that it’s not snowing anymore.

No more ice.

It’s melting.

It’s melting, and it’s warm in here, yes.

Pah, finally!

Yeah, it’s been a crazy couple of weeks here in Austin.

We were part of the winter storm that blew through

and just wouldn’t stop.

It was unrelenting.

We had some difficulties ourselves.

There were some power outages.

There was some moments without water.

One of the big things we faced as a challenge

for us is we really couldn’t leave.

We couldn’t drive anywhere.

Texas was not ready for this at all.

We were on the better end of things,

but still, it was really difficult for us.

Things are kind of returning back to normal.

I was able to get out today

for the very first time and buy food.

– [Interpreter] We haven’t had school this whole week.

So it’s been a whole thing.

This week plus an additional two days,

so we had last week and then Monday and Tuesday,

as well, without school.

And so finally, we started school today.

I learned here and there.

I did play a whole lot of games during the week, for sure,

but I learned here and there just little things.

– The pandemic has not stopped, nor has life,

and so we’re just,

we’re navigating down the river and doing our best,

and sometimes we do better than other days.

Raising a child and having his brother and sister

on the other coast

that we can only communicate through Zoom

and we haven’t been able to see for over a year

and the stresses of that,

the stresses on that for them and for us

and for Adam and I, and then our families.

And Adam’s family has had COVID.

My family has been going through major medical issues,

and then you add the snow storm.

It’s just, it’s a lot.

So adaptation, being able to adjust,

being able to be patient and forgiveness,

and all the while still trying to raise a kid that’s 13

and excited about the world and gaming

02:47

and wants to go and do things and have friends

02:50

and communication with friends and not at school,

and as a deaf kid, that’s super, super, super different,

but he’s supporting us, and we’re supporting him,

and sometimes, he’ll just walk in

and just pat me on the back,

and that’s all I needed for that moment.

That’s all I needed for that day,

just that extra little push to get us over the finish line.
