But threatening national security through a morning jog? That’s something new. GPS tracing company Strava may have accomplished just that through its Global Heat Map app, which lights up popular jogging routes. Of course, parks and gyms shine the brightest, but 20-year-old college student and map nerd Nathan Ruser noticed that areas in Syria and the Sahara Desert also lit up. Ruser, who studies international security at Australian National University, immediately sounded the alarm when he realized it corresponded to military facilities where U.S. soldiers train or just try to stay in shape. The Pentagon is reviewing GPS policies while Strava CEO James Quarles is working on a way to hide sensitive data, but the company is showing plenty of heat on social media. It currently has 61 negative sentiments online, with netizens decrying the app’s boneheaded security blunder. –Hugo Guzman
