I’ve been big into reality dating shows for a while now, and when I first watched Love is Blind last year, I told my friend at the time that there should be a lesbian dating show. Now there is!
The Ultimatum: Queer Love is a new Netflix show that features couples that are all either women or nonbinary.
According to Style Caster:
How does The Ultimatum: Queer Love work? Per the press release from Netflix, the jist of The Ultimatum: Queer Love is as follows: “One partner is ready for marriage, the other may have doubts. An ultimatum is issued. And in just over eight weeks, each couple will either get married or get out, after they each choose new potential partners in a life-changing opportunity to get a glimpse of two different futures.”
This show is a spin off of the earlier Netflix show, The Ultimatum: Marry or Move on, which featured heterosexual couples. Essentially, the show operates on the same premise. When the couples arrive, they “break up” and date the other show participants.
Then, they find a “trial marriage” partner that they will move in with for 3 weeks to see what life would be like with a new partner.
After the 3 weeks are ended, they spend 3 weeks living with the partner that they came with.
At the end of the show, the original couples get to decide if they are going to propose and start a new life together as fiancés or if they are going to go their separate ways.
The show also features a reunion episode that is filmed a year later so you can follow up and see how the couples are doing after their proposals or break ups.
…
For me, it was great to be able to see queer representation on a mainstream streaming platform like Netflix. I really enjoyed watching the show, and the introspection that all the participants had into their various relationships.
Ultimately, you get to see if you think that ultimatums help or hurt relationships, by following the course of these five couples.
As I was watching, I got caught up in their happiness and heartbreak, and hoped the best for all of the couples involved. It makes you want to believe in love, and that it can be made stronger when it is put to the test.
Since it is Pride month, this is a great time to watch The Ultimatum: Queer Love on Netflix if you enjoy the drama of dating reality shows. I highly recommend this one as one of the best that I have watched in a while.
