I went to the International Yoga Day organized by the consulate of India today and within the first 10 minutes, I felt like I didn’t belong.
We started with a simple Warrior II pose, looking at the people in front and behind me, it seemed like they didn’t know what that meant.
In yoga, warrior II is a symbolic basic pose, it looks simple, but, there are little things to know about alignment; it’s not easy and requires technique, experience, and knowledge.
Secondly, looking around me, it was obvious that most of the people in the room were not regular practitioners.
I felt like I was in a retirement village.
Long story short, I felt terribly misplaced and very uncomfortable.
Contrast this with the same experience I had several weeks ago at Atlas chiropractics’ fifth birthday party.
Upon entering the room, the music created an ambiance that was soothing, and I felt totally at home with the sounds of bamboo flutes, and hanging drums, the type I would play in my living room at home.
The experience itself was interesting; there was a pictorial in front of us very beautifully designed to be elegant and stylish, depicting the facial muscles. Adjacent to it that was a small dressing mirror where we can observe ourselves.
Furthermore, during the class, the teacher’s style of voice, guidance, and language use, were all easy to relate to. And I instantly found myself relaxed and at ease.
The session lasted an hour; time flew by.
Two different expressions of yoga created such a different experience for the same person.
It’s important to find what suits you…yoga is for everyone, don’t pass judgement until you find something that works for uniquely you!
