Often, history cycles itself. Long ago, the British tax on salt evolved into a huge protest in India. Today, the US raises tariffs on Chinese imports, such as batteries or future technology.
Whether it’s salt or semiconductors, taxation is to take the power and control.
Then: Salt Tax
During British rule in India, people had to pay high taxes on salt. They aren’t allowed to sell or make the salt on their own. British took control over the essential need as taxation.
In 1930, Mahatma Gandhi protested against the British salt tax by walking 240 miles and made own salt.
This act shows the world how Indians strive hard to get independence from British rule.
British took control over everyday life.
Now: Tariff Raise On China
US tariff on Chinese imports, which includes batteries, solar panels and computer chips.
The reason? The US want to enhance its domestic production and reduce its dependency on China
As a result, the US raised tariff affects the global trade relation, huge economic fall and other countries would alter the tariff.
Wrap Up
Then or Now: Taxes are used as a powerful tool to control people.
British taxed salt to control people’s everyday life.
Now,
US raised tariffs to take control over the global market.
Unlike Gandhi’s ahimsa, there will be a tariff war among countries to show their dominance and power to decide the rule.
Small Shift, Huge Change!
