When we were kids, we kinda just
were
more often than kids are now.
Not so much scheduling
and pressure to get places.
Lives of kids today
are so planned-
so regimented.
So much pressure placed on parents
and carried onto kids
to have a shiny, epic
educational, mindful
organic, intentional
good time.
Yes, we had fake meat
margarine
carcinogenic soft drinks
second-hand smoke
and plenty of video games and TV
that were violent
and riddled with toxic gender roles
But I remember days
on endless days on end
in a constant state of
non-rushed thereness
With a broken down driveway
full of cars
and no money to use them
even if they did work
The sun-washed mundane became my playground
and boredom faded from the everything
into so much nothing.
