Money Can’t Buy Happiness. Here’s Why.
You’ve heard it a million times: “Money won’t make you happy.”
Turns out? It’s legit.
Researchers — psychologists, economists, you name it — all agree: Poverty makes people miserable, but once your basic needs are covered? Extra cash doesn’t boost your happiness.
I know what you’re thinking: “Uh, try me. Dump a pile of cash on my doorstep and let’s run the experiment.”
Funny enough, they did. Studies tracked lottery winners. At first? Pure euphoria. One year later? Barely happier than the rest of us.
So why? If money feels like it should fix everything… why doesn’t it?
After 20 years digging into this, I’ve landed on a key truth:
We’re hostages to our own expectations.
Think about it:
- Get more than you expected? You’re thrilled.
- Get less? You’re disappointed.
- Hit the bullseye? You’re… comfortable.
But here’s the kicker: Our expectations keep climbing. Like a ratchet wrench — they click upward and won’t slide back down.
My Escalating Taste (And Probably Yours Too)
Take my first car: a rusty ’62 Volkswagen Beetle. I loved it… until I rode in my friend Johnny’s ’68 Beetle. His had heat. And actually started. Suddenly, mine felt… sad.
Then I rode in a friend’s Trans Am (with that iconic flaming chicken hood decal). Game over. After that? No Beetle could ever satisfy me.
Houses? Same story.
I once toured Lake Minnetonka with students. We passed a cozy cabin with a grill and dock. “That’s the dream,” I thought. “I’d be set.”
Then we floated further…
- “Ooh, that one’s got Adirondack chairs…”
- “Wait — brick walls? A yacht dock? Now we’re talking.”
- “A 15,000 sq ft compound? My wife and I could live in separate ZIP codes!”
By sunset? That “dream cabin” I’d loved hours earlier? Turns out it was the mansion’s boathouse. Literally — where they store inner tubes.
Your Brain Is Never Satisfied
I tested a theory: Is anything immune to upgrade culture? Spoiler: Nope.
- Cars? Buy a Rolls-Royce? There’s a “better” one.
- Houses? HGTV exists to make you hate your “popcorn ceilings.”
- Towels? Once you try heated racks, room-temp feels barbaric.
- Water? $1,100 bottles exist.
- Salt? $36/ounce. (Unless it’s distilled from Elvis’ tears, hard pass.)
We’re hardwired to always want “the next thing.”
So What’s the Escape Hatch?
1.You’ve got two choices:
- Stay on the treadmill:
- Chase raises to buy nicer things.
- Then need even nicer things.
- Risk: Taking jobs you hate, ditching hobbies, drifting from friends — all to service “the lifestyle.”
2. Choose freedom:
- Accept money can’t make you happy — but it can buy peace.
- Live below your means.
- Save fiercely.
- Protect the job you love and people you cherish.
The Real Win
No luxury car, mansion, or diamond-encrusted nail polish will make you whisper: “I’ve arrived. This is nirvana.”
True wealth isn’t about more — it’s about enough.
Enough to weather storms.
Enough to sleep without money-anxiety.
Enough to protect what actually matters.
You won’t lie on your deathbed wishing you’d bought the $36 salt.
But you might wish you’d savored the unpurchasable moments.
