Jamie Reidy comments on legendary boxer Manny Pacquiao’s loss last night to Timothy Bradley.
ESPN.com reports that the fight’s split decision caused great controversy:
In a fight Pacquiao seemed to have in hand, two judges decided otherwise, giving Bradley a split decision Saturday night and ending the Filipino fighter’s remarkable seven-year unbeaten run.
Pacquiao was the solid favorite heading into the fight.
Promoter Bob Arum fumed, the crowd at the MGM Grand arena booed, and Pacquiao seemed stunned when the decision was announced. Arum said there would be a November rematch, though he blasted the way the decision went down. “I’ve never been as ashamed of the sport of boxing as I am tonight,” said Arum, who handles both fighters.
Now, THAT is really saying something, given the embarrassments boxing has endured over the years. I mean, Mike Tyson bit off a part of Evander Holyfield’s ear…
But the most interesting thing to me about this upset is that it occurred after Pacquiao swore off his party boy lifestyle and dedicated himself to Christ. No more drinking, no more late night carousing with women whose names are not “Mrs. Pacquiao.”
In fact, last month his anti-gay comments got him banned from Los Angeles’s The Grove shopping center.
I can’t wait to see if, post-defeat, Manny Pacquiao will run from the church back into the arms of hedonism!
GMP readers, what do you think the boxing champ will do?
