John Pike, the UC Davis cop who became infamous for pepper-spraying seated protestors last year is no longer employed by the university.
The San Francisco Chronicle explains:
“I can confirm that John Pike’s employment with the university ended on July 31, 2012,” UC Davis spokesman Barry Shiller said Tuesday. He declined to comment further.
Pike could not be reached for comment. He was involved in a Nov. 18 campus demonstration during which students were protesting rising tuition. On the widely circulated video, Pike is seen dousing protesters for about 15 seconds with orange pepper spray.
Pike was suspended with pay after the incident. According to a database of state worker salaries, he earned $110,243 in 2010, the last year figures were available.
California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso led the 12-member task force that reviewed the episode. It found that it “should and could have been prevented,” and recommended police reforms at UC Davis.
What do you think of incidents like this involving protestors?
If Pike was terminated, did he deserve to lose his job?

At $110k a year in pay, I’d bet that he had enough years accumulated that if he held on until July 31, he’d be able to retire with a pretty good pension.
You cannot claim to be in favor of social justice and support the right of public sector workers (already protected by civil service rules) to unionize (or at least support the right of police officers to unionize). Of course, this does not make Scott Walker a supporter of social justice (that cops are exempted from his “reforms” is evidence enough)…
Suspended with pay. In other words, a paid vacation. I think we should put him in prison rather than giving him a paid holiday..
Good. It would be better if he was locked in chains and shoved in a hole someplace to rot, much like he’d love to do to his victims. Those with power who choose to abuse that power deserve the harshest fates imaginable. Pepper spraying folks who aren’t violent is cowardly. It is immoral. It is abusive. I don’t care what the law says – the law hasn’t meant a thing my entire life. Cops ignore it and walk away scott-free. Innocent people hang. The rich do whatever they want, and the poor get punished no matter what. That doesn’t add… Read more »
