You can say a lot of things about Todd Akins, and many have. But apparently the man isn’t a quitter.
The Washington Post reports on how Akins is insisting upon continuing his race for Missouri Senate despite being asked by many prominent Republicans to bow out.
Many big-name Republicans have repudiated the comment, and Sen. Scott Brown (R-Mass.), Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) and Senate candidate and former congresswoman Heather Wilson (R-N.M.) have called for Akin to drop out of the race. National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas) said in a statement that Akin should take 24 hours to reevaluate what’s best for himself and his party.
It should be noted that Akins claims he hasn’t received any direct requests to drop out of the race.
What do you think? Should Akins drop out of the race or have his numerous back-pedals made it clear that he didn’t mean “legitimate rape” but rather “forcible rape”?
What do you think would best serve the Republican party, at this point?

rape is rape. by definition, it’s forcible. it’s abusive. and, whether he backpedalled or not, his comments speak to his ignorance of how the human female body works, and how men, in the 21st century, should participate in public discourse.
Agree Mark, it doesn’t matter if he walks the statement back at this point or not. It was a stupid, hurtful, thoughtless statement that no elected official of either party should ever get away with. Six years of this ignoramus is hardly what our nation needs at this point. He should be forced to leave the race. If he doesn’t the RNC and state party should pull all funds. The sad part is a stupid stunt like this is about the only way McCaskill has a hope. She is so unpopular at this point that Beelzebub’s step-brother could be running… Read more »
Charles Krauthammer on Fox News Special Report today: {Akins} “is doomed.” and “has to go.”
Mr. Akins, Your comments are reprehensible, and incredibly stupid. The GOP has worked too hard to carry a liability like you. Wiener left, Spitzer left, and now, before you do any more damage in this probable Romney state, will you please leave too.
Note to self: it’s Akin, not Akins.
To be blunt, it doesn’t matter how far he backpedaled to “forcible rape”. Were he to say those same comments, replacing the word “legitimate” with “forcible”, THEY WOULD STILL BE HORRIBLE. 14-year-olds who are raped by their elders? They don’t matter, and of course they should be forced to carry the rape-fetus inside them for 9 months.
