Summer is finally here, and with it — boat season! There really is nothing quite like spending the day out on the water with nothing but good food, good drinks and good company.
Whether you want to get involved with water sports, entertain your loved ones or simply sail and star-gaze — buying a boat is well-worth the time and investment… if you do it right.
New to the land of boat ownership? Here’s what to expect your first time around.
If You Buy it, They Will Come
Expect people to want to go out on your boat with you.
Lots of people.
There’s a reason they say, “the best boat is someone else’s boat.” Whether it’s your ride-or-die friends, neighbors who notice your shiny new toy or your dad’s ex-brother-in-law’s cousin — people will find you, and they will want to go boating with you. Especially when they’re not the ones paying.
If this isn’t something you’re looking for, you may want to keep your new purchase under wraps until the cold season. If you’re cool with it though, let them know and start planning some trips.
Boating is a great way to bring people together, soak up the sun and enjoy the good times. Bonus points if your tag-alongs offer to chip in on gas, or bring great food and drinks. Don’t expect that though, and be prepared to spend quite a bit of your own money.
So Many Boats, So Little Time
Boats have been around for thousands of years, so it’s no surprise that there are tons of types to choose from. Unless you’re looking for a Viking longship, chances are you will find one that will serve all of your needs — and without hitting your wallet like an iceberg.
Your main choice is going to be between a motorboat and a sailboat. Narrow down what kind of boat that you want, and go from there.
Not looking for a full-body workout? Go with a motorboat.
These bad boys offer ample space to host small groups and are great for a variety of uses from fishing to entertaining. These will also be your fastest choices between the three types — unless you’ve got massive arms or again, Viking longship with a full crew.
If you’re more about tending to the boat old-school style — sailing might be for you. You’re in command of everything but the wind, which you may have found a way around too.
Sailing requires a decent amount research and even classes to master, but it’s well worth it and can be one of the most rewarding hobbies.
Sail On, Captain!
No matter which boat you decide to go with, enjoy yourself and be safe out there. Make sure you’ve got plenty of lifejackets, rescue gear and first aid kits.
You never know what the tides will bring, but you can definitely be prepared for it.
Happy summer, and happy sailing!
