RIP Ramarley Graham, an unarmed 18-year-old man of color killed by a cop, who apparently had “no choice” but to shoot him. He is another casualty of the prison-industrial complex’s bias against young men of color. Graham was assumed to have a gun because, you know, young black man in a bad neighborhood. He died because of the officer’s mistake.
RIP Eric Borges, who killed himself a week after creating an It Gets Better video. He was bullied throughout school for his sexual orientation and his mother performed an exorcism on him to get the gay to go away. He died because of the shame and self-loathing our culture instills in queer men and men perceived to be queer.
RIP to the victims of the shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin. They were murdered by a white supremacist who performed in racist rock bands, which fortunately unlike every other case of a straight white man attacking people is being treated as a domestic terror incident. (A day later, someone burned down a mosque in Joplin, Kansas. Because some people will just not be happy until all those scary brown-people religions have gone away.)
RIP to everyone who has died because of others’ hatred and fear and bigotry, especially the ones I don’t know about. Some people hate other people because of their race, or sexual orientation, or gender, or religion, or basically any other stupid irrelevant thing you care to name, and sometimes that hatred turns into violence, and you end up with kids dead. Fuck that.
I mean, Jesus, bigots, I know you have to come up with some way to cope with being on the losing end of history and becoming more and more irrelevant dinosaurs and so on, but could you try a way that doesn’t involve murder? Thank you.
