When my daughter turned three years old, we decided it was time to send her to school several days a week. We wanted to gradually introduce her to being in a school environment, not wait until she was, say, of kindergarten age and shock her system by dropping her off at an all-day program. With so many schooling options in our town, my wife and I had to do a lot of research, asking friends, acquaintances and other parents what experiences they’ve had with particular schools. It was a laborious undertaking. But this was our daughter’s education, so we weren’t going to settle for less by choosing a school just because it was nearby.
My wife and I both work. Prior to turning three, my daughter had been going to daycare at a neighbor’s house for two years. It was a safe and endearing environment, and my daughter came to love her daycare provider. When we were researching schools, our greatest concern was finding a teacher who would engender as much confidence as our daughter’s daycare provider. Obviously it was important if the prospective teacher made a good impression on us during our first face-to-face meeting; but it was even more important that our daughter possess positive thoughts about the teacher. She, after all, would be spending two and a half hours with this teacher on Tuesdays and Thursdays (while still going to daycare on the other days), and the last thing we wanted was for our daughter to dread going to school. But she doesn’t. She loves it, and she loves her teacher. We knew she would because we met quite a few teachers at different schools, and she had the best disposition. My wife and I knew it almost immediately, but my daughter knew it, too. As soon as we left the open house, she asked, “When am I going to see that teacher again.”
That sealed it. Because we didn’t settle for less, our daughter loves school.
