A new movie that brings exciting twists to the comedy genre
This is not your average comedic film. Many of the movies in this genre recently go for being gross or way out there hoping for a few laughs from the audience. And many of these films star star men and have women in supporting roles, but not this one. It not only is a clever movie, but also very funny. The movie looks at things from the eyes of a female lead star, and the men play minor roles instead. It is not like anything out there right now, and has the potential to do very well when it comes out this Friday.
Susan Cooper (Melissa McCarthy) decided to quit teaching and join the CIA in hopes of an exciting life. But this is not what has happened. She wants nothing more than to be a spy, but is working as a CIA analyst in the basement of the building where she gets to help other spies make it out of their missions in one piece. She hates this job and wishes her life would begin or at least get spiced up a bit. But when Bradley Fine (Jude Law) winds up dead, and somehow the names of all of their operatives gets leaked, Susan gets her chance.
A nuke is out there and needs to be found before it gets sold to the highest bidder, and Susan is the women who steps up for this mission. No one thinks she will be successful, but they really have no choice. She is given an identity, and is sent on her way. Rayna Boyanov (Rose Byrne) is the only person who knows the location of this nuke, but Susan is told to not go anywhere near her. But when a number of things go wrong, Susan winds up meeting her. Susan has to find out where this nuke is, but with such high stakes it is by no means an easy mission. How is she going to accomplish this dangerous mission? Why was Bradley killed? How is she going to find out where the nuke is? And is she going to have to do this mission all by herself?
This is the break out role for Melissa McCarthy. She gets to put all kinds of dimensions to Susan Cooper, and they are hilarious to witness. Whether she is trying to bring to life her different identities, or has to bend the rules a bit here and there she always delivers comedy gold. This is a role like she has never played before, with Susan going from straight edge to sharp at a moments notice. It is all a part of this new job for her, and she is splendid at it. I really enjoyed watching her play Susan, and hope this helps uplift her to the next level of comedy.
The plot is also very good. All of the cast brings something to the table, and no person is there just fill space. The film begins like any normal spy movie, but veers from this mold early on. The way the plot moves forward is not always obvious, and brings with it a few good twists along the way. Overall it is a fun comedic adventure that many people will enjoy.
This was a film that surprised me. It really is a new kind of comedy, and also is a women empowerment film. It shows not only that women can play roles like this, but that they can accomplish it much better than a men. The men in this film are the bumblers and bring the silly comedic moments which is a nice change from the usual formula. Because of this the movie gets 8.5/10. It will not be a film everyone will like, but most people will laugh and enjoy seeing everything this movie brings to the table.
If you are looking for a different kind of comedy, this is a movie you will want to run out and see. If you are looking for a good movie to see with your friends, then you should suggest this film to them. It has some adult situations and innuendos so it is not a film for kids, but it is a film the majority of people will enjoy. It has so many good things going for it, and is one of those rare films you really must not miss out on.
