A Fomorian is an ancient Irish deity of destruction. Telaina Eriksen brings them into the 21st century.

Fomorian
If you had lived in another time
you would have smoothed your hair
into a pompadour. I often imagined
your soft hands placing a patch at
the corner of your mouth—a 21st
century regency buck.
Did you spend time with me because you
wanted to, or because you felt you had to?
Acknowledge the dung beetle in the middle of the room.
What was your obligation to me?
Peel off the beetle’s exoskeleton,
climb into it—smooth
your vanity, your hair. Replace your
powder and patch. Turn. Look in
the mirror. How does it feel,
after all these years, to wear the
armor of the despicable?
